Photographer & videographer in Canggu

Canggu faces due west onto black volcanic sand, so the sun sets straight into the sea and the hour before it is the only time we plan beach shoots here.

The place

Canggu grew from rice fields and surf breaks into Bali's busiest district for long-stay visitors, and the photographs follow that mix: black-sand beaches, board-carrying surfers, cafés with concrete and rattan interiors, and villa pools, with a few rice paddies still holding out between new builds. The coastline runs north-west, so the sun drops into the ocean at an angle that lights faces from the side rather than behind — easy, warm light for holiday and couple shoots. Dark sand absorbs glare, which keeps skin tones richer than on a white beach, but it is hot underfoot by afternoon.

We use Canggu as a base as much as a backdrop. Content creators book us here for a quick 30-minute set at a villa or café, adding extra hours ($100 each) to move on to the beach; villa owners book interiors in the morning and add extra hours for twilight exteriors at dusk, with a drone pass where the rules allow. Traffic is the constraint: the shortcut lanes jam at sunset, so we plan sessions in one neighbourhood — Batu Bolong, Berawa or Pererenan — rather than crossing between them. Tanah Lot is twenty to forty minutes north, close enough to finish a shoot at the sea temple.

When the light works

When to shoot in Canggu?

Dry season, April to October, brings steady sunsets and the strongest west-coast swell — great for surf action, but the shore break at Echo Beach can be rough for wading couples. July, August and late December are the busiest; beach-club music and crowds fill Batu Bolong by sunset. November to March, onshore wind and afternoon storms are common; sunsets come and go, and sea foam and debris can wash up after heavy rain. We then shoot villas and cafés by day and keep the beach as an optional finish. Nyepi closes the beaches and roads for 24 hours.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Canggu, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. 01

    Batu Bolong & Echo Beach

The heart of Canggu: a wide black-sand beach with surfers in the water, a small temple on the rocks and a line of bean bags filling up from five o'clock. For clean frames we walk away from the bars towards the waterline, where wet sand reflects the sky and the crowd falls out of focus. Echo Beach, a few minutes north, has rocky ledges and heavier waves that make dramatic backgrounds; we never put you on the rocks on a big swell day. Wind is usually light at sunset, which suits hair and dresses.

    Best time
The last 60 minutes before sunset
    Permits
Free; small parking fee. Pura Batu Mejan on the sand is a working temple — no posing on its steps

    Light through the year

    • April–October

Clean sunsets most evenings; the beach is at its busiest, so we start further from the bars.

    • November–March

Storm clouds can give the most dramatic skies of the year — or rain. We decide at 3 pm.

  2. 02

    Pererenan Beach

Across the river from Echo Beach, Pererenan is the quieter neighbour: fewer bars, a long open stretch of sand and fishing boats pulled up near the rivermouth. It is our choice for families and for couples who would rather not be watched, and it gives long, uncluttered frames for a drone pass when conditions and the airport-zone rules allow. The river mouth shifts with the season and can be muddy after rain; we pick a spot north of it when that happens.

    Best time
Sunset; also calm on weekday mornings
    Permits
Free; parking at the beach road
  3. 03

    Canggu rice paddy lanes

Between Berawa, Babakan and Tibubeneng, small paddies still line the lanes, often with a palm row or Mount Batukaru on the horizon on clear mornings. They change fast — a field that was green last year may be a villa site now — so we check them the week of your shoot. Light is open and unshaded; early morning gives mist and dew, late afternoon gives warm backlight across the rice. It is the easiest way to add a green, "Bali" look to a Canggu session without the drive to Ubud.

    Best time
After sunrise, or about an hour before sunset
    Permits
Free from public lanes; walking into a paddy needs the farmer's permission
  4. 04

    Cemagi & Seseh coast

North of Pererenan the coast turns wild: rock platforms, a small temple on an outcrop and almost no beach clubs. At low tide pools form on the reef shelf and mirror the sunset, which is the reason to come. It is the best place in the area for an editorial-feeling couple shoot or an elopement portrait session without an audience. The rock is sharp and slick, so we bring sandals for walking and only take them off for the frame; the tide comes in quickly here.

    Best time
    Sunset at low tide
    Permits
Free; the clifftop temple of Pura Batu Ngaus is for worship only
  5. 05

    Tanah Lot

The sea temple on its rock is the classic Bali sunset, and with it comes the classic crowd. The sun sets behind the temple from the main cliff, so silhouettes are easy and faces need a reflector or flash. We prefer the cliffs to the north, near Pura Batu Bolong's arch, where the angle opens up and fewer people stand on the ledge. At low tide you can walk to the base of Tanah Lot, but the temple steps are for worshippers. Leaving takes as long as arriving — plan for traffic after dark.

    Best time
Sunset; arrive 90 minutes early for a clear position
    Permits
Ticket around IDR 75,000 for foreign adults; visitors cannot enter the temple itself

Frequently asked questions about Canggu

Can we shoot at a café or beach club in Canggu?

Often yes, but each venue sets its own rules. Many cafés are happy with a short shoot outside peak hours if you order something; some beach clubs ban professional cameras or charge a fee, and a few require a minimum spend. We ask in advance and suggest places where we know a session works. For content shoots we plan the route so we are never waiting for a table.

Do you photograph villas for Airbnb and booking sites here?

Yes — Canggu is where most of those shoots happen. We photograph interiors in soft morning light, exteriors and pool at twilight when the lights are on, and add an aerial pass where the airport zone allows it. Before the day we send a short preparation checklist: cleared surfaces, fresh linen, lights working. Photos are delivered sized for listing platforms and your own website.

Is the sea at Canggu safe to stand in for photos?

Knee-deep, on the right day, yes. The west coast has strong rips and dumping shore breaks, especially in the dry season swell. We keep you at the waterline where the wash reaches your ankles and take the "in the water" frames from a low angle, which looks deeper than it is. On rough days we skip it entirely; no frame is worth being knocked over in a dress.

Can you fly a drone in Canggu?

In parts of it, at limited height. Canggu sits outside the busiest approach paths to Ngurah Rai but still within zones where altitude is restricted, and temples and ceremonies are off-limits. We check the zone for your exact location before promising aerial shots, fly only with the property owner's agreement for villa work, and keep the drone down when people on the beach would be overflown.
