Lombok gives you Bali-scale scenery without the queues: horseshoe bays and grass headlands on the south coast, Rinjani’s 3,726-metre cone in the north, and viewpoints where yours is often the only camera.

The place

Most couples come to Lombok for the south coast. Around Kuta and the Mandalika strip the shore breaks into a run of bays — Tanjung Aan, Mawun, Selong Belanak — divided by grass headlands you can walk up in ten minutes. That geography is the reason to shoot here: a hill above a bay gives height without a drone, and the water behind you reads turquoise even at midday because it is shallow over pale sand. The roads between the bays are paved, so three locations in one session is realistic rather than ambitious.

The north is a different shoot. Senaru, on Rinjani’s lower slopes, hides the Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls in forest that stays green through the dry season, and Sembalun has open highland fields under the volcano. Lombok is also where the Gilis begin — Bangsal harbour is the public crossing — so a Lombok booking pairs naturally with a day on Gili Air or Gili Trawangan. We build the route around the light: the south coast at sunrise or golden hour, waterfalls in the flat light of mid-morning, and never a two-hour drive between them while the sun is going down.

When the light works

When to shoot in Lombok?

The dry season runs roughly from April to October. Skies are clearest from June to September, when the south-coast hills turn straw-gold and the morning offshore wind keeps the bays glassy. November to March is the wet season: green hills, afternoon storms and mornings that usually stay workable, so we book sunrise. Rinjani’s summit trails close every year for roughly January to March and after heavy rain; the Senaru waterfalls stay open but run brown after storms. During the MotoGP week at Mandalika, usually in early autumn, Kuta’s hotels fill and roads near the circuit close in sessions — plan around it.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Lombok, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. 01

    Merese Hill

A grass headland between Tanjung Aan and the bay of Seger, ten minutes’ walk up from the car park. From the top you get both bays at once and the rolling ridge line that makes the place recognisable. At sunset it fills with local riders, drone pilots and other shoots by five o’clock, so we either come for sunrise, when the hill is nearly empty, or arrive early and work the quieter eastern slope. It is windy — loose hair and veils fly, which helps a dress and hurts a hat. Lombok airport is about 25 km north; we check the drone zone before every flight.

    Best time
Sunrise, or the last hour before sunset
    Permits
Small local entry and parking levy, around IDR 10,000–20,000

    Light through the year

    • July–October

Dry grass goes gold and glows in low side light; the sea is at its most turquoise against it.

    • January–March

The headland is vivid green; clouds build by early afternoon, so sunrise is the safer slot.

  2. 02

    Tanjung Aan

Two linked bays with coarse, pepper-grain sand and water that stays calm and clear inside the reef. Morning light comes over the eastern headland and lights the water from behind you, which is what you want for that colour. By mid-morning sunbed rentals and sarong sellers spread along the sand — they will step into a frame, and a polite, firm “tidak, terima kasih” works. For a sea-stack frame, a short boat ride reaches Batu Payung, the umbrella rock off the point; it is only worth it at low swell.

    Best time
    Early morning, before about 9:00
    Permits
Beach free; parking fee; boat to Batu Payung rock negotiated on the spot
  3. 03

    Selong Belanak

A wide, gentle curve of fine pale sand, forty minutes west of Kuta, where Lombok’s surf schools teach beginners — rows of bright boards make a ready-made foreground. The view down from the road on the western headland is the establishing shot. Towards sunset farmers often walk water buffalo along the beach to graze; it is not scheduled and never guaranteed, but when it happens it is the most local frame on the island. Keep a respectful distance and let the herd pass rather than directing it.

    Best time
    Late afternoon into sunset
    Permits
    Free beach; small parking fee
  4. 04

Sendang Gile & Tiu Kelep waterfalls

Sendang Gile is ten minutes down a stairway from the Senaru road; Tiu Kelep is another 30–45 minutes along an irrigation channel and through two or three river crossings, which is why it is quieter and taller. The gorge is in shade for much of the day, so the light is soft and even — good for skin, and an ND filter turns the water to silk. Spray soaks everything within twenty metres: bring a towel for lenses, a dry bag, and shoes that grip wet rock. Not a walk for a long white dress; we change at the falls.

    Best time
    Mid-morning, 8:30–11:00, before tour groups
    Permits
Entry ticket at Senaru plus a local guide for Tiu Kelep, paid on site
  5. 05

    Pink Beach (Pantai Tangsi)

On the Sekaroh peninsula at Lombok’s south-eastern tip. Fragments of red coral tint the sand pink, but honestly: the colour is subtle and shows mainly along the waterline in high sun — we do not push it to candy-floss in the edit. The reward for the drive is emptiness and the turquoise channel behind. Combine it with a boat stop at the islets off Tanjung Luar to make the half-day worth it, and bring water and shade; there is little of either.

    Best time
Late morning at low tide, when the sun is high over shallow water
    Permits
Small local entry fee; around two hours’ drive from Kuta, or by boat from Tanjung Luar

Frequently asked questions about Lombok

How far is the south coast from Lombok airport?

Close. Lombok International (LOP) sits near Praya, and Kuta and Tanjung Aan are roughly 30 minutes south by car. That makes an arrival-day golden-hour shoot possible if you land by early afternoon. Selong Belanak is about 45 minutes from the airport, Senggigi around an hour and a quarter, and Senaru in the north closer to two and a half hours — the waterfalls are a separate day.

Can we combine Lombok and the Gili Islands in one booking?

Yes, but on separate days. From Kuta it is about two hours to Bangsal harbour, then a short public or private boat to the Gilis. Squeezing both into one session wastes the best light on the road. We usually shoot the south coast on one evening and the Gilis at the next sunset; the island-transfer add-on covers the coordination, while boat tickets are paid separately.

Is there a dress code on Lombok?

Lombok is mostly Muslim (the Sasak people), and more conservative than Bali away from the beach. Swimwear is fine on the tourist beaches of Kuta, Selong Belanak and the Gilis. In villages, at Senaru and on the road, cover shoulders and knees. Around Friday midday prayers and during Ramadan we keep shoots discreet and away from mosques; a sarong in the bag solves most situations.

Can you fly a drone on Lombok?

At most coastal spots, yes, within Indonesian civil-aviation rules: registered drone, visual line of sight, away from crowds. The airport’s controlled zone reaches towards Kuta, and the Mandalika circuit is closed to drones during race events, so we check each site on the day. The real limit is often wind on the headlands — above about 30 km/h we keep the drone in the bag.
