The route
We start just after sunrise on a paddy lane in Babakan or Tibubeneng, already dressed — hair and make-up ($90) can be done at your villa from about 4:30 am. The first frames are wide: the two of you small on the raised path between the fields, the palms in a line and, if the air is clear, Batukaru above. Then closer portraits with the low sun behind, which lights the edge of a veil or a sleeve and the dew on the rice. We stay on the public lanes and step into a field only with the farmer’s agreement, which we ask for on the morning. With extra hours ($100 each) you change in the car — a gown travels best hung up — and we drive five minutes to Pererenan or Echo Beach, which at 7:30 am is almost empty: black sand, white wash, the formal look against something wild, and a few frames walking barefoot with shoes in hand.
