Photographer & videographer in Uluwatu

On the Bukit the beaches sit at the foot of limestone cliffs, so most of them are reached by long staircases and lose the sun an hour before the clifftops do — we shoot the beaches early and the cliffs at sunset.

The place

The Bukit is the dry limestone foot of Bali, and Uluwatu is its far south-western corner: cliffs up to seventy metres high, turquoise water over reef and coves tucked between headlands. It gets noticeably less rain than the rest of the island, which is one reason it has become Bali's centre for weddings and proposals — clifftop venues here can plan an outdoor ceremony months ahead with reasonable confidence. The light is big and open; with nothing behind the cliffs but ocean, sunsets go down cleanly into the sea and the sky stays coloured for a long time after.

That height is both the gift and the logistics. Padang Padang, Suluban and Bingin are reached by steps and rock gaps, and their sand is in shadow from mid-afternoon, so we do them at midday or in the morning and come up for the golden hour. For a proposal, we scout the exact ledge with you beforehand, arrange a hidden position, and keep the moment private even on a busy venue lawn. Drone work is possible on parts of the Bukit, away from the temple and from the airport approach over Jimbaran; we confirm the zone for each venue. Expect villas and venues spread along narrow roads — allow time between them.

When the light works

When to shoot in Uluwatu?

The Bukit is the driest part of Bali. April to October brings clear sunsets nearly every evening and the big south-west swell that fills Uluwatu and Padang Padang with surfers — good for action, rough for water-level portraits. This is also peak wedding season, and popular cliff venues book out months ahead for July to September. From November to March storms are shorter here than inland, but humidity haze softens sunsets and some coves collect debris after rain. Kecak at the temple runs nightly unless Nyepi or a major ceremony intervenes; Galungan brings heavy temple traffic.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Uluwatu, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. 01

    Pura Luhur Uluwatu

The temple sits on the very edge of a seventy-metre cliff, and the walkway along the rim gives the most dramatic sunset frames on the Bukit, with the temple roofline and the ocean in one view. The inner sanctum is closed to visitors, so we work the cliff paths. Monkeys here snatch sunglasses, hats and phones to trade for food — keep accessories in a bag and do not carry snacks. The kecak dance in the amphitheatre is a strong candid add-on at sunset, shot without flash from your seats.

    Best time
From 16:30 for the cliffs; kecak starts around sunset
    Permits
Ticket around IDR 50,000 incl. sarong; kecak around IDR 150,000; no drones over the temple

    Light through the year

    • April–October

The sun sets into the sea beyond the cliff; the kecak sells out, so book early.

  2. 02

    Karang Boma Cliff

A grassy headland just east of the temple, with an unbroken view along the cliff line and Uluwatu temple in the distance. It is one of our favourite proposal and couple spots: wide, quiet compared with the temple and with room for a photographer to stay well back. There is no fence, so we keep everyone several metres from the edge and use a long lens for the dramatic "on the cliff" frames. Wind can be strong in the dry season; it makes great movement in a dress and less great hair.

    Best time
Golden hour, from about 90 minutes before sunset
    Permits
Small access fee collected locally; no barrier at the edge
  3. 03

    Suluban Beach (Blue Point)

A hidden cove reached through a gap in the cliffs, with sea caves, turquoise pools and surfers paddling out to the Uluwatu break. At low tide the caves open into natural frames with the sea beyond; at high tide the beach disappears entirely, so we time the visit to the tide table. Light bounces off the white limestone and gives soft fill even in strong sun, which makes this one of the few places on the island that works around midday. Sandals, not heels — the descent is steep and wet.

    Best time
Midday at low tide; the caves are in shade after 15:00
    Permits
Free access through the cliff-side cafés; steep stairs down
  4. 04

    Padang Padang Beach

You enter through a narrow staircase in a rock cleft — a photograph in itself — onto a small cove with clear water and a famous surf break on the left. It is compact and gets crowded by late morning, but early on the water is calm and glassy, ideal for couples in the shallows. By mid-afternoon the cliff shadow covers the sand. Monkeys patrol the steps here too. Nearby Bingin offers a similar feel with more space and cliff-hung guesthouses, which we often combine in one session.

    Best time
Morning, before the beach fills and the cliffs shade the sand
    Permits
Entry around IDR 15,000 for foreign visitors
  5. 05

    Melasti Beach

The road down to Melasti was cut straight through the limestone, and the descent between two white walls is one of the Bukit's signature frames. Below is a broad beach of pale sand and very blue water, with tall cliffs that glow warm in late light. It is busier than it used to be, with beach clubs at the base, but the wide shoreline leaves room to work. It faces south-east, so mornings are its best light; at sunset the cliff casts long shadows and we shoot the road and clifftop instead.

    Best time
Early morning or late afternoon, at low to mid tide
    Permits
Small entry and parking fee, around IDR 10,000–20,000
  6. 06

    Jimbaran Bay

A long, calm, curving bay where fishing boats lie on the sand and restaurants set candlelit tables on the beach at dusk. The water is gentle, which makes it safe and relaxed for families and honeymooners, and the sun goes down across the bay with planes descending towards Ngurah Rai — a detail some couples love. It is the softer, less dramatic counterpart to the cliffs and the natural setting for a dinner-and-sunset shoot. Morning at the fish market is a completely different, colourful option for documentary-style pictures.

    Best time
Sunset, when the seafood tables are set on the sand
    Permits
Free beach; no drones — directly under the airport approach

Before you book

Frequently asked questions about Uluwatu

How do you organise a surprise proposal in Uluwatu?

We agree the spot, the time and a signal with you in advance — often a clifftop like Karang Boma or a venue terrace an hour before sunset. The photographer arrives early and blends in as a tourist or sits at a nearby table, then photographs the moment from a distance with a long lens. Afterwards we step in for a relaxed couple shoot in the same light. If you want flowers, a setup or a dinner reservation, we can suggest local suppliers.

Is Uluwatu a good place for an elopement or small wedding?

It is the most popular choice in Bali, mainly because the Bukit is the driest part of the island and the cliff venues are built for it. A symbolic ceremony is simple to arrange; a legally registered marriage in Indonesia involves religious and civil paperwork, so many couples marry at home and celebrate here. We photograph the day, help with timing around sunset and can recommend celebrants and planners we work with.

Are the monkeys at Uluwatu temple dangerous?

They are rarely aggressive, but they are expert thieves. Glasses, hats, earrings, phones and anything that dangles are targets; they grab and then wait for a trade of fruit from staff. We ask you to leave loose accessories in the car or a zipped bag and to wear them only for frames away from the troops. Do not feed or tease them, and keep children close.

Can we include beaches and cliffs in one session?

Yes, with the right order. The coves lose direct sun by mid-afternoon and involve stairs, so we start at a beach such as Padang Padang or Suluban, then drive ten to fifteen minutes to a clifftop for golden hour. For the 30-minute starting session we suggest one of the two; with an extra hour ($100), both work comfortably. Flat shoes for the stairs, and a change for the cliff, keep it easy.
