In one Jakarta afternoon a couple can stand in a Dutch colonial square, under the glass towers of Sudirman and on a waterfront at PIK — which is why Indonesian couples come here for city-styled pre-wedding photos.

The place

Jakarta is a city of layers rather than a single landmark. In the north, Kota Tua keeps the stucco and shutters of old Batavia around Fatahillah Square, with Glodok’s Chinatown a few streets away. In the centre, Monas rises over Merdeka Square, and the Istiqlal Mosque faces the neo-Gothic cathedral across the road. Menteng has the tree-lined lanes and Dutch-era villas; Sudirman, Thamrin and SCBD are the glass, the pedestrian bridges and the light trails. On the northern coast, PIK adds new waterfronts, bridges and a Chinatown-styled street built for strolling.

Traffic decides how a Jakarta shoot works. We plan one cluster per session — Kota Tua and Glodok, or Monas and Menteng, or Sudirman at blue hour — and use the MRT along Sudirman when the roads lock up. Weekend mornings are the easiest; on Sundays the main avenue becomes a car-free day and fills with runners and cyclists. Many malls, office lobbies and some heritage interiors require a permit for any shoot with a tripod or styling; we arrange letters in advance where they are needed, and keep to public space where they are not.

When the light works

When to shoot in Jakarta?

The wet season runs from about November to April, with the heaviest rain in January and February, when low-lying parts of North and West Jakarta — including the streets around Kota Tua — can flood and close for a day or two. Downpours usually come in the afternoon, so we shoot mornings. The dry months, June to September, bring more sun but also haze; the skyline is often soft, and the clearest air comes the morning after rain. Around Lebaran (Eid al-Fitr, about eleven days earlier each year) millions leave for their home towns: the roads empty for a week, which is wonderful for street frames, though many cafés and vendors close.

The spots

The best spots to shoot

Here is where to shoot in Jakarta, with the hours that work and permit notes.

  1. 01

    Fatahillah Square, Kota Tua

The cobbled square in front of the old Batavia city hall, now the Jakarta History Museum, with its white façade, shutters and bell tower. Early morning gives even light across the façade and a square you can actually see; by ten it is full of school groups and the sun is overhead. Rental bicycles in candy colours with matching hats are a local prop — fun for one sequence, then move on. A block west, the restored Kali Besar canal and its warehouses give a quieter, more European frame.

    Best time
6:30–8:30 on a weekday, before the crowds and the heat
    Permits
Square free; museum interiors ticketed; styled or commercial shoots may need a permit from the Kota Tua management
  2. 02

    Monas (National Monument)

The 132-metre obelisk with its gilded flame stands in the middle of Merdeka Square, one of the largest city squares in the world. Its scale is the frame: we shoot from far out along the tree-lined paths with a longer lens so the couple stays readable against the monument. After rain, puddles on the plaza give reflections. Midday is brutal here — no shade near the base — so mornings or the last light into blue hour, when the flame is lit, are the only sensible slots.

    Best time
Early morning, or blue hour when the monument is lit
    Permits
Park free; ticket for the observation deck; drones prohibited — the presidential palace is next door
  3. 03

    Sudirman–Thamrin skyline and pedestrian bridges

The spine of modern Jakarta: towers on both sides of a ten-lane avenue, linked by new pedestrian bridges, including the sail-roofed one near Karet. From the bridges you get the avenue running to a vanishing point and, at blue hour, rivers of headlights below — slow shutter for the traffic, flash or a still pose for the couple. Jakarta sits six degrees south of the equator, so sunset barely moves through the year. Further north, the Selamat Datang fountain at Bundaran HI is the classic roundabout frame.

    Best time
Blue hour, roughly 18:00–18:30 all year; Sunday morning for the car-free day
    Permits
Public bridges and pavements free; tripods can draw security questions; rooftops only via a hotel or bar booking

    Light through the year

    • June–September

Haze softens the towers; blue hour with lit windows works better than sunset.

    • November–March

Clean air after storms and wet tarmac that doubles the city lights — keep an umbrella and a free evening.

  4. 04

    Istiqlal Mosque & Jakarta Cathedral

The largest mosque in Southeast Asia and the neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral face each other across the street, joined since 2021 by an underground “tunnel of friendship”. For many Indonesian couples, especially interfaith ones, that pairing is the point of the frame. We shoot from the public pavement and the cathedral forecourt with permission, dress modestly, and treat the interiors as places of worship, not sets. Friday midday and Sunday mass are off-limits for any shoot.

    Best time
    Morning, outside prayer times
    Permits
Free visits; modest dress required; posed couple shoots inside are generally not permitted
  5. 05

    Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK)

A newly built district on reclaimed land on the north coast, and the go-to for couples who want something cleaner than the old city. Pantjoran PIK is a Chinatown-styled street of red lanterns and gateways; the PIK 2 waterfront faces west over the bay, so the sun goes down over the water rather than behind towers. The look is new and polished — good for fashion-led pre-wedding frames. Weekends are busy with families; weekday evenings are calmer, and the drive from central Jakarta is about an hour.

    Best time
Late afternoon into sunset over Jakarta Bay
    Permits
Public streets free; parking charges at the waterfront areas; private developments may ask for a permit

Frequently asked questions about Jakarta

How much time does Jakarta traffic take out of a shoot?

A lot, if you let it. Crossing the city at rush hour can take ninety minutes. We keep each session to one cluster of locations a short walk or MRT ride apart, start early, and avoid moving between north and south Jakarta between 16:00 and 19:00. For a longer pre-wedding booked with extra hours, we split it into a morning in the old city and an evening on Sudirman.

Do we need permits for a pre-wedding shoot in Jakarta?

For public streets and squares, usually not, as long as the setup stays light. Kota Tua, museums, malls, hotel lobbies and private developments often want a permit or a fee for styled shoots with tripods, reflectors or outfit changes. We tell you in advance which of your chosen locations need one, apply on your behalf where possible, and pass the fee through at cost.

Can you fly a drone in Jakarta?

Mostly not. Central Jakarta around Monas and the presidential palace is a restricted zone, and the approaches to Soekarno-Hatta and Halim airports cover much of the rest. Flights elsewhere need permission under Indonesian aviation rules. Where an aerial matters, we look at the coast around PIK or arrange a rooftop instead, which often gives a better skyline angle anyway.

Which day of the week is best for photos in Jakarta?

Saturday morning is the easiest all-rounder: light traffic and offices closed. Sunday morning puts runners and cyclists on Sudirman for the car-free day, lively for street frames but busy for portraits. For Kota Tua and Monas, a weekday at opening time is quietest. Whatever the day, blue hour on Sudirman works best on a weekday evening, when the towers are fully lit.
