The route
We meet on the beach about forty minutes before sunset: Batu Bolong for the surf crowd, the temple on the rocks and the colour of the beach bars, or Echo Beach if you prefer darker sand and bigger waves breaking behind you. The first minutes give walking shots and a few close portraits along the board racks; the rest is at the water as the sun drops, with your feet in the wash and the sky doing most of the work. With an extra hour ($100) we start inland on a paddy path between Canggu and Pererenan, where the light is already warm and the fields are quiet, for open space and, if you ride one, the scooter frame everyone wants, then ride five minutes to the coast.

The timing
The Canggu coast faces west, so the golden hour before sunset is the obvious slot and the busiest one: from about 5 pm the beaches fill with surfers, dogs and people heading to the bars. That crowd is part of the atmosphere, but if you want empty sand, a 6 am start gives soft light and almost no one around. From April to October evenings are usually clear; in the wet season, November to March, storms build in the afternoon and the sea turns brown after heavy rain, so mornings become the better bet. Allow extra time for traffic on the Canggu shortcut.

02What should I wear for a beach shoot in Canggu?
Whatever you would actually wear on holiday here, one notch smarter: linen, light cotton, a summer dress, an open shirt. Pale and warm colours stand out on dark volcanic sand; black disappears into it. Bring sandals you can slip off, sunglasses for a couple of frames and nothing you mind getting splashed. If you surf, bring the board — it says more about Canggu than any prop.
03Can we shoot at Pura Batu Bolong, the temple on the rocks?
From the beach and the path around it, yes — the temple makes a striking background at sunset. Entering the shrine itself is for worshippers, and on ceremony days the area is busy with offerings and processions, when we keep a respectful distance and photograph elsewhere. Wear something that covers shoulders if you go near the steps. We check the Balinese calendar before your date so a ceremony does not surprise us.
04What if the sunset is rained out?
We move it at no charge. The day before, we look at the forecast together, and if rain is likely at sunset we offer a morning slot or another evening of your stay. Short showers in Canggu often clear just before sunset and leave the best skies of the week, so if it is only drizzle we may suggest waiting twenty minutes rather than cancelling.
