The route
For Tanah Lot we pick you up in Canggu so that we arrive about an hour and a half before sunset — the drive takes twenty to forty minutes depending on the lanes. You buy the ticket at the gate and we walk through the market stalls, past the main viewing terrace where everyone stops, and along the cliff path to the north. Near the rock arch of Pura Batu Bolong — the Tanah Lot shrine, not the Canggu beach of the same name — the angle opens up: the sea temple sits behind you with the surf around its base, and a longer lens pulls it close without the crowd. If the tide is low we walk down to the rocks facing the temple for a few frames; the temple steps themselves are for worshippers. The last minutes are silhouettes as the sun drops, with a reflector or a small flash so your faces are not lost. With an extra hour ($100) we start at the Cemagi reef in the softer late light and drive ten minutes to finish at Tanah Lot.
