The route
A few days before, the pilot checks your chosen spot against the current airspace rules and tells you plainly whether and how high it can be flown. On the day we meet on the coast at Seseh or Cemagi at a falling tide. The pilot walks the area first — wind, people, the temple on the point, which we keep well clear of — then launches. The first frames are directly overhead: you lying on the dark sand in a light outfit, arms out or curled together, with the white wash reaching towards you; then standing in a pool on the reef shelf so the sky reflects around your feet. Then the drone pulls back for wide frames along the coast, you small at the edge of the surf. If there is time, we finish five minutes inland on a paddy lane, walking the raised path between fields for a top-down green frame. The photographer on the ground directs you over the phone or by hand signals.
