Why here

Why choose Elopement photography in Canggu?

An elopement in Canggu tends to be one of two things. The first is a villa ceremony: you are already staying in a private place with a garden and a pool, a celebrant comes to you, and the vows happen with no audience and no venue clock. The second is the coast at Cemagi, north of the beach clubs, where the reef shelf runs out into the surf, a small temple sits on the point and, at low tide, pools hold the colour of the sky. It is the closest thing this side of the island has to a cliff elopement — raw, open and nearly empty — and it is a public shore, so you share it with fishermen and the odd walker rather than having it reserved. Many couples combine the two: vows in the privacy of the villa, then ten minutes in the car for portraits on the reef in the last light. The starting 30 minutes covers the vows and the portraits straight after; that combined route uses an extra hour.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Canggu look like?

01

The route

On the coast-only plan we meet at Cemagi about forty-five minutes before sunset, when the tide is dropping. The celebrant stands with their back to the sea and you face each other on the flat rock, so the surf and the horizon are behind you both; the vows take ten minutes or so, and the photographer works around you quietly, wide and close, without stepping between you. Straight afterwards come the portraits: walking out across the reef shelf in bare feet, the dress and the pools catching the sky, the temple on the point small in the background, and a last silhouette as the sun goes. On the combined plan, with an extra hour ($100), the vows happen in your villa garden at around 4:45 pm, with flowers on the bale and maybe a friend on a video call, and then we drive to the reef for the portraits. Adding more hours lets us photograph getting ready — the rings, the letters, the dress going on — from the early afternoon.

02

The timing

Set the vows about forty-five minutes before sunset — which is between roughly 6 and 6:45 pm through the year — so the portraits fall in the best light rather than the ceremony using it up. Cemagi needs a low or falling tide; the sea comes in fast over the shelf, and a rising tide shortens the time you can stand out there, so we choose your date with the tide table open. April to October gives the most reliable sunsets. In the wet season keep the villa as the rain plan: a covered bale or terrace makes a perfectly good ceremony space, and we go to the reef only if the sky clears. Avoid Nyepi in March, and check the local ceremonial calendar — some days the shore is used for processions and offerings.

FAQ — Elopement photography in Canggu

Do we need permission to say vows on the beach at Cemagi?

For a ceremony of two with a celebrant and a photographer, usually not: it is a public shore and nothing is set up. Arches, chairs or a sound system change that, and the local village may ask for notice or a contribution. You cannot close the beach, and the temple on the point is off-limits for the ceremony itself. We tell you what applies for your date before you book.

Will our Canggu elopement be a legal marriage?

Usually not on its own. A legal marriage in Indonesia for foreigners involves a religious ceremony followed by civil registration and weeks of document work, so most couples register at home and have a symbolic ceremony here with a celebrant. The photographs are the same either way; your celebrant can confirm what applies to your nationalities.

Can you photograph us getting ready at the villa?

Yes, with extra hours at $100 each. One extra hour is enough for the last part of getting ready — the dress, the rings, a first look by the pool — before the ceremony. If you want the slower story from hair and make-up onwards, book two. A hair and make-up artist can be added for $90 and comes to the villa.

Can we have aerial photos of the reef?

Often, yes: the drone add-on ($150) brings a licensed pilot for a few top-down frames of the two of you on the reef shelf. Cemagi lies further from Ngurah Rai than central Canggu, but height limits still apply, and we never fly over the temple on the point or anyone else’s ceremony. We confirm the location can be flown before you pay.
