The route
We meet at the temple car park around 4:30 pm, buy the tickets and tie on the sarongs together — they are part of the photos, so a colour that suits your outfit is worth a minute of choosing. Bags are zipped and sunglasses put away before the forest stretch at the entrance, where the monkeys are most active. The first frames are on the southern section of the rim path, where a low wall lets you lean out over the drop and the temple roof sits on the far headland behind you. We then walk the path in short stages, stopping wherever the crowd thins, and keep the last ten minutes for the viewpoint facing the sun as it lowers over the water. We do not enter the inner courtyards, and we stop shooting if a ceremony passes.
