The route
The Tetebatu session starts in the dark: from the south coast it is roughly an hour and a half’s drive, so most couples sleep in Tetebatu the night before. At about 6 am we walk out along the raised dikes between the paddies while Rinjani is still clear of cloud — the volcano tends to hide by mid-morning. The first frames are wide, the two of you small in a sea of green with the cone behind; then closer, walking the narrow dike in single file, sitting on a farmer’s shelter, the bride’s dress lifted off the mud. Farmers arrive early; we greet them, keep out of the young rice and never trample a paddy for a frame. The south-coast alternative is Mawun, a horseshoe bay enclosed by two headlands, shot from the slope and finished on the sand.
