The route
For surfers the obvious set is Gerupuk, fifteen minutes east of Kuta. We meet by the harbour around 6.30 am as the boatmen ferry the first surfers out to the breaks inside the bay: you with a board under your arm on the jetty, wading out to a boat, sitting on the bow with the bay behind you. The seaweed farmers’ rafts and stilted huts give the background a texture you will not find in Bali. If you do not surf, we swap Gerupuk for a single bay — Mawun is calm and enclosed — and work it slowly: walking, sitting, a few close portraits, a wide frame where you are small in the landscape. For trekkers, a guesthouse veranda with a pack and boots is honest and works in any weather.

The timing
Early mornings suit solo shoots on Lombok: from about 6 to 7.30 am the light is soft, the bays are empty and you are not posing in front of a crowd, which most people find easier. Gerupuk is busiest with boats on the morning tide, so we check the tide table for your date. In the dry season, May to September, the south-east trade wind blows offshore in the morning and onshore by afternoon — good for surfers, good for hair before ten. In the wet season the mornings are usually the clear part of the day. If you are trekking Rinjani, shoot before you go; legs and faces look better on day one than after a 3,000-metre descent.

02I am a woman travelling alone. How does the meeting work?
You choose: the photographer meets you at your guesthouse reception or in a public place, such as a busy café on Kuta’s main road, and you see their name and photo in advance on WhatsApp. Shoots end before dark. On Lombok, covering shoulders when walking through villages is a sensible courtesy; on the beach itself you wear what you like.
03I have never posed for a photographer. Will it look stiff?
The first five minutes are always warm-up frames we do not expect to use. After that you get small, concrete directions — weight on the back foot, look at the boats, walk to the post and back — rather than “be natural”. Movement hides nerves, which is why we often build the session around walking and doing.
04Can I add a short video for my own socials?
