The route
A Selong Belanak session usually starts at the top of the beach at about 4.45 pm, on firm sand where small children can stand still for the length of a group portrait. We take that first, along with a frame of each parent with each child. Then we let the family walk towards the water and follow: someone gets carried, someone gets splashed, a sandcastle happens. Rows of colourful surf-school boards make a cheerful backdrop; if a farmer brings water buffalo along the beach, we stop and photograph your children watching them from a respectful distance. The last ten minutes are for the parents alone while a grandparent or older sibling holds the little ones. Staying at a villa with a lawn? We can do the whole thing there instead — no sand in the nappy bag.
