The route
Take Selong Belanak at about 7.30 am, when the surf schools have not yet laid out their boards. The pilot launches from the car park at the western end and climbs while you walk onto the sand. First, top-down frames: you lying in the wet sand where the waves have just retreated, so the foam forms a white arc around you; then standing on the line between dry and wet sand, with the shadow stretched long beside you. We direct you by phone or hand signals, since you cannot hear the pilot from up there. Next come wider, angled frames showing you small against the full curve of the bay and the green hills behind. If the boards appear, we use their colour too — one line of bright rectangles with you at the end of it.
