Why here

Why choose Holiday photoshoot in Ubud?

Ubud is one of the few places in Bali where a holiday photoshoot needs no car at all. Most guesthouses in and around the centre are family compounds — a carved gate, a courtyard with frangipani, the household shrine in the corner — and behind the main streets the rice fields begin within a ten-minute walk. That is the whole idea of this session: photographs of the Ubud you are actually living in for a week, starting at your door, rather than a trip to a viewpoint you visited once. It also suits a hotel out in Sayan or Payangan, where the grounds and the paths around them are often all the backdrop you need.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Ubud look like?

01

The route

The photographer comes to your guesthouse. The first few minutes are in the courtyard, with the host’s permission: you on the carved steps of your room, breakfast on the veranda, the light filtering through the frangipani. We keep away from the family shrine itself — it is a place of prayer, not a set. Then we walk out through the gate into the lane, where the walls are mossy and offerings sit on the pavement each morning, and follow it to where the houses stop. In central Ubud that is usually one of the field walks behind the main road, such as the path towards Juwuk Manis, where the session ends among the paddies with the town’s roofs and palms behind you. If you are in a jungle hotel outside town, we stay in its grounds and the track beyond its gate.

02

The timing

Seven in the morning is the sweet spot here: the lanes are quiet, the offerings are fresh, and the field paths are cool. Unlike the famous terraces, these walks do not fill with coaches, so there is no need to be out at first light. Late afternoon is lovely in the fields too, but the centre of Ubud jams from about four, so we meet on foot rather than by car. From November to March keep to the morning, when showers are least likely; from April to October either end of the day works.

FAQ — Holiday photoshoot in Ubud

Our hotel is outside Ubud in the jungle. Do we need to drive anywhere?

Usually not. Hotels in Sayan, Kedewatan, Payangan and Keliki tend to have the views people come for — pools over the valley, gardens, paths into the fields — and all of them are within the Ubud area, so travel is included. Check with the hotel that an outside photographer is welcome; if the grounds are off limits, the village track outside the gate is normally just as good.

Is it all right to photograph in our host family’s compound?

Ask your host the day before — most are happy, and some enjoy appearing in a frame. The household temple in the compound is off limits for posing, and if the family is making offerings or holding a small ceremony that morning, we start in the lane instead and come back later. Shoes come off where the family takes theirs off.

Can we include the Monkey Forest?

You can, but it changes the session. The Sacred Monkey Forest has its own entry ticket and opening hours, and the monkeys grab anything loose — sunglasses, hair clips, phones — so props and bags stay behind. The moss-covered stone bridges and temple steps inside are atmospheric, but we treat it as an extra hour ($100) rather than part of a 30-minute walk from your door.

We only decided on photos at the end of our stay. Can we still get them in time?

Yes. A morning shoot in Ubud is often available a day or two ahead, because it needs no long drive or ticket booking. The standard gallery arrives in 48–72 hours; if you fly home or move to the coast the next day, add express delivery for $50 and the full edited set arrives within 24 hours.
