The route
The 30-minute session usually takes the sunrise on the rim; the full route below, down to the sea of sand and the savanna, needs extra hours. We leave Cemoro Lawang by jeep in the dark and reach a sunrise viewpoint on the caldera rim, Penanjakan or a quieter point nearby, about an hour before dawn. The first outfit is warm and practical, often with a coat or blanket in frame, and the frames come as the sky turns from blue to orange over Bromo, Batok and Semeru. Once the crowds leave the rim, we drive down into the sea of sand: long, empty frames with the cone behind, wind lifting veils and skirts, the jeep as a prop if you like it. You change into the second outfit in the car, and we finish in the savanna on the southern side, where green hills give a softer, romantic last stop.
