Why here

Why choose Pre-wedding photoshoot in Yogyakarta?

Yogyakarta is Java’s cultural heart, and a pre-wedding here has a texture that beaches cannot match: carved stone, royal water gardens, temple spires and a living volcano on the horizon. The 30-minute starting session takes one of these places; with extra hours ($100 each) you can pair contrasts, such as Taman Sari’s sultan’s pools in the morning with Prambanan’s Hindu towers at sunset, or a misty sunrise over Borobudur’s plain with Merapi’s lava fields. It suits couples who want something rooted in Indonesia, and many choose to wear kebaya or batik. Heritage sites have their own rules, so permits shape the plan from the start.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Yogyakarta look like?

01

The route

A 30-minute session covers one of these places; the two-stop routes below need extra hours. The city route starts at Taman Sari as it opens: arched gateways, the bathing pools of the sultans and the underground mosque passages, shot before tour groups arrive. The first outfit, often a kebaya or a light gown, suits the cream stone and turquoise water. After a midday break to change and cool down, we drive about forty minutes to Prambanan for the late afternoon, using the lawns and paths around the temple compound for long frames with the spires behind, finishing as the sun sets beside the towers. The countryside route swaps both: sunrise from a hill overlooking the Borobudur plain and its mist, then a jeep up Merapi’s slopes for black lava rock and the volcano’s summit.

02

The timing

Java runs an hour behind Bali, with sunrise around 5.15 to 5.45 am and sunset around 5.30 to 6 pm through the year. Sunrise over the Borobudur plain means a 4 am start from the city, and the mist is most reliable in the dry season, roughly May to October. That season also gives clear views of Merapi, while November to April brings heavy afternoon rain, which is why we schedule outdoor locations in the morning then. Taman Sari is busiest late morning and at weekends, and Prambanan fills up at sunset during Indonesian school holidays. Midday heat is intense year-round, so longer bookings are split around it rather than shot straight through.

FAQ — Pre-wedding photoshoot in Yogyakarta

Can we have a pre-wedding shoot at Borobudur or Prambanan?

Both are protected heritage sites, and professional or pre-wedding photography inside the temple compounds usually requires permission from the site management and a fee. Access to Borobudur’s upper terraces is limited by a visitor quota. We check the current rules for your date and apply where needed. Where a permit is not practical, we shoot from the surrounding hills and grounds, which often give the better view of the temple anyway.

What does a Yogyakarta pre-wedding cost in total?

The shoot is from $590 for 30 minutes, one outfit, one location and 15+ edited photos, with travel within the Yogyakarta area included. Extra hours for a second location or outfit are $100 each. On top of that you pay entry tickets for Taman Sari, Prambanan or Borobudur, any heritage-site photography permit, and the jeep for the Merapi lava tour if you choose that route. Hair and make-up is a $90 add-on, and a drone add-on is $150 where flying is allowed.

Should we wear traditional Javanese outfits?

Many couples do: a kebaya and batik sarong, or a beskap for the groom, look natural against Taman Sari’s stone and Prambanan’s carvings. Rental shops in the city offer full sets. If you add an extra hour for a second outfit, it can be a western gown and suit, which pairs well with the Merapi lava fields or the sunset. Inside temple grounds, shoulders and knees should be covered, and you may be given a sarong to wear.

How do we get to Yogyakarta from Bali?

Direct flights from Bali to Yogyakarta International Airport take roughly an hour and a quarter. The airport is about an hour’s drive from the city centre, and Borobudur is around an hour from the city in another direction. We suggest arriving the day before the shoot and staying in the city or near Borobudur, depending on which route you choose, so the early start for sunrise is realistic.
