Why here

Why choose Couple photoshoot in Yogyakarta?

Prambanan is the temple everyone photographs, and on a holiday afternoon you share it with coach groups. A short drive north stands Plaosan, a ninth-century Buddhist complex built around two near-identical main temples, often linked by local tradition to a royal couple of different faiths. That story is a good reason for a couple to be photographed there, but the practical reasons are better: few visitors, grey stone walls of an easy human scale, rows of small shrines that make natural frames, and working rice fields right up to the edge of the compound. You get temple and countryside in the same half-hour, with no walking between them, and a relaxed pace that lets two people who are not used to the camera settle into it.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Yogyakarta look like?

01

The route

We meet at the Plaosan gate in the late afternoon and start on the path between the two main temples, which line up so neatly that a couple standing between them becomes the centre of a symmetrical frame. From there we work along the rows of small shrines: leaning on a weathered wall, walking hand in hand through a gap in the stones, a close portrait where the light comes in low from the west. Halfway through we step outside the compound onto the raised earth paths between the paddies, with the temples now behind you across the green or golden field. The last minutes are pure light — the two of you on the field path, backlit, with farmers heading home in the distance. If you book an extra hour, the second outfit fits naturally in the fields at sunset.

02

The timing

Plan for the last hour and a half of daylight, roughly 4 to 5.30 pm, when the sun drops behind the temples and lights the fields from the side. Plaosan’s official hours have ended in the late afternoon, so we time the temple frames first and keep the fields, which are open land, for the end. Rice around Prambanan is grown in two or three crops a year rather than to one calendar, so a field can be flooded, bright green, golden or freshly cut in any month; we check it a few days before. The dry season, April to October, gives dusty gold light and clear evenings; the wet season gives the greenest fields and the risk of afternoon storms.

FAQ — Couple photoshoot in Yogyakarta

Why Plaosan rather than Prambanan itself?

Prambanan is spectacular but busy, and its scale makes two people small in the frame. Plaosan is quieter and closer to human size, so the photos are about you with the temple around you, not the other way round. It also has rice fields at its edge, which Prambanan does not. If you want the famous spires, we can add them with an extra hour.

Do we need a permit for a couple shoot at Plaosan?

For a relaxed couple session in everyday clothes, the normal entry ticket has been enough. Styled shoots with gowns, reflectors and assistants are treated as pre-wedding or commercial photography at heritage sites and can need a permit and fee. If you plan anything beyond a holiday look, tell us and we check before the day.

Is it all right to walk into the rice fields?

We stay on the raised earth paths between the paddies, which locals use to walk through them, and never step into the planted rice. The fields are someone’s livelihood; if a farmer is working nearby we ask first, and a smile and a greeting usually earns a wave. Wear shoes you can slip off, as the paths can be muddy.

What colours work best for this setting?

The stone is grey and the fields are green or straw-gold, so warm and earthy tones stand out without clashing: rust, cream, olive, terracotta, soft white. Coordinate rather than match — one patterned piece, the other plain. Avoid neon and heavy logos, and keep shoulders and knees covered inside the temple grounds.
