Why here

Why choose Drone video in Yogyakarta?

Most of Yogyakarta’s famous sights are exactly where a drone may not fly: the great temples and the palace. The landscape that rewards aerial video is to the north, on the slopes of Merapi. Here the 2010 eruption left wide grey channels of ash and boulders cut through green forest, with the volcano’s cone standing over it all, and open jeeps climb the tracks from Kaliurang every morning. From the air, that becomes a story with a subject: a single jeep trailing dust across a scarred, enormous slope, revealed as the drone rises over a ridge to show the summit behind. No viewpoint photo gives that sense of scale and motion. Merapi is also an active volcano, inside a national park, with zones that close when its alert level rises, so this session is planned around what is open and flyable on your date.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Yogyakarta look like?

01

The route

We meet at Kaliurang before dawn and ride up with your jeep, the pilot in the back with the drone packed. The first stop is a flat, open clearing on the lava field where the guide confirms flying is fine: the drone launches as the sky turns orange and the opening shot is a slow rise from the ash to the summit in first light. Then the jeep becomes the subject. Your driver runs the track below while the drone follows from behind and alongside, low over the boulders, then climbs to show the jeep as a dot in the channel. One pass is an orbit around you standing on a ridge with the cone behind; another is a reveal over the bunker at Kaliadem. Thirty minutes is the flight time, spread across two or three stops on the tour. Everything is filmed in 4K, and you receive the raw clips alongside the edit.

02

The timing

Sunrise, around 5.15 to 5.45 am, is the slot: the summit is usually clear at first light, and cloud tends to wrap it by mid-morning. Jeeps leave Kaliurang around 4.30, which means leaving central Yogyakarta at about 4. The dry season, roughly May to October, gives the clearest views of the cone and the most flyable mornings; from November to March, cloud and drizzle often hide the summit and grounded flights are more common. Wind on the upper slopes can be strong even when the city is still, and the pilot decides on the spot. Above all, Merapi’s alert level sets which areas are open; we check the official status in the days before and change the plan if it rises.

FAQ — Drone video in Yogyakarta

Is it legal to fly a drone on Merapi?

The lava tour area lies within or next to Gunung Merapi National Park, which can require a permit and fee for drones and commercial filming, on top of national drone rules. The closed zones around the summit are off-limits to everyone. We check the current requirements before your date, apply where needed and pass any fee on at cost.

What does the whole morning cost with the jeep?

The drone video is from $320 for 30 minutes of flying, the edit and the raw clips. The jeep is hired per vehicle from a Kaliurang operator, with the price set by the route length, and holds up to four people, so the pilot rides with you. Any park or drone fee is extra. We quote the jeep with the booking.

Is the jeep tour safe with an active volcano?

The tours run only in areas outside the official danger zone, which is set by Indonesia’s volcano monitoring agency and changes with Merapi’s activity. If the alert level rises, routes are shortened or closed, and we move the session to another day or another place. The real everyday hazards are dust and bumps, so hold on and bring a scarf.

Can we book more than 30 minutes of flying?

Drone sessions do not take the extra-hour add-on. Thirty minutes of flying spread over the tour is usually plenty for a 60–90 second film, since batteries, wind and the jeep’s schedule set the pace anyway. If you want a second location, such as the south coast at sunset, it is booked as a separate session.
