The route
We start inside the jeep on the way down from the viewpoint — the windows fogged, the two of you wrapped in one blanket, the caldera appearing through the windscreen — because the ride is part of what you will remember. On the sand, the jeep parks at an angle with Batok behind, and we use it as a set: sitting on the bumper, leaning on the spare wheel, one of you pulling the other up into the back. Then we walk towards Pura Luhur Poten. Its dark stone walls and split gate stand alone on the ash, and from outside the wall, with the cone rising behind, they make the most graphic frame in the caldera. The last part is the approach to the crater: the horses waiting at the foot of the cone, a short ride if you like, and a frame of the two of you on the first steps of the stairway looking up at the steam. If you want the view from the top, that is better as part of an extra hour, since the climb itself takes time.
