The route
Instead of joining the jeep convoy to the top, we start closer to your lodge. Seruni Point, a terraced viewpoint reached by a long flight of steps near the Cemoro Lawang side, faces the caldera head-on and draws a fraction of the Penanjakan crowd; on a busier morning, or if the steps are too much in the dark, King Kong Hill does the same job. We get there before first light so you can settle in with a blanket and something hot. The session follows the sunrise: close, quiet frames while the sky is still blue and your faces lit only by the glow, then wider ones as the cone and Batok take colour and cloud lifts out of the caldera. As the sun rises we turn you towards it for backlit portraits, the steam behind you going gold. With an extra hour ($100) we drive down to the sea of sand, change into a lighter second look in the jeep and finish in the warm, low light below the cone.
