In short

A family photoshoot on Nusa Penida costs from $180 for 30 minutes and includes 15+ edited photos online within 48–72 hours. We recommend Atuh Beach on an early morning: a concrete stair, a calm bay and shade at the bottom. The photographer’s crossing and car are the $90 island transfer; boat tickets and entry fees are extra.

Why here

Why choose Family photoshoot in Nusa Penida?

We will be straight about it: Nusa Penida is not the easiest island for a family shoot. The boat lands on the beach, so children are carried through the shallows; the roads are long and bumpy; and the famous spots are cliffs, with an hour-long scramble to Kelingking Beach and a tidal pool at Angel’s Billabong that is no place for small children. What does work is choosing the one spot built for it. Atuh Beach on the east coast has a solid concrete stair, a sheltered bay that is calm enough to paddle in, a rock arch and a little island offshore, warungs with shade and cold drinks at the bottom, and morning light coming in from the sea. It gives you the white-cliff Penida look without asking a four-year-old to cope with a drop — and it is next to Diamond Beach if older children want the view from the top.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Nusa Penida look like?

01

The route

We start at the top of the Atuh stair, where there is a railing and a wide view of the bay, arch and offshore island: one family portrait with everyone looking at the camera, done in the first five minutes while everyone is still fresh and clean. Then we walk down together, letting the children lead — the stair is steep but solid, and the frames on the way down are some of the most natural. At the bottom the session turns into play: paddling at the edge of the calm water, building something in the sand, a parent swinging a child against the arch. We break for water in the warung shade whenever someone needs it. The last minutes are close portraits in the soft light under the cliff, before the sun clears it.

02

The timing

Atuh faces east, so the light is best from sunrise to about nine, and for children that is also when the bay is coolest and emptiest. That timing means sleeping on the east side of the island or at least on Penida — the first boats from Sanur arrive too late, and the drive from the harbour is over an hour. Day-trippers reach the east coast from mid-morning. If you are only coming for the day, Crystal Bay in the late afternoon is the gentler alternative: flat access, shade trees and a sunset over the water. From November to March, mornings are usually dry and afternoons stormy; from April to October the water is clearest.

FAQ — Family photoshoot in Nusa Penida

Is Nusa Penida OK with a toddler or a baby?

It is doable, but plan for it. Boats land on the beach, so you will carry the little one through knee-deep water; car seats are rare on the island, so bring your own if you use one; and the drive to the east coast is long and winding. Atuh suits small children because the stair is solid and the bay is calm. Kelingking and Angel’s Billabong we would skip with a toddler.

Can grandparents manage the stairs at Atuh?

Most people who walk comfortably can, slowly, with a rest halfway; it is a concrete stair with a handrail on parts of it, not a dirt path. Coming back up in the heat is the harder part, which is another reason to shoot early. If someone would rather not go down, we take the group portraits at the top viewpoint and the play frames below with the rest of the family.

Can mum or a daughter wear a flying dress for a few frames?

Yes, the flying-dress rental is a $120 add-on and works well at the top of the Atuh stair, where the sea wind catches the train. We do those frames first or last, so the rest of the half hour stays relaxed for the children. For a girl, a shorter, lighter fabric from home often works better than a long train.

What should a family bring for the day?

Reef-safe sunscreen applied an hour before (so faces are not shiny in photos), hats for between frames, plenty of water, snacks, a dry bag for the boat and a full change of clothes for each child — they will get wet. Coordinate colours rather than matching outfits: whites, sand and one soft colour look good against the turquoise bay.
