Solo travel photoshoot · Nusa Penida

In short

A solo travel photoshoot on Nusa Penida costs from $140 for 30 minutes at one spot, with 15+ edited photos online in 48–72 hours. We usually choose a quieter place than Kelingking, such as the Peguyangan stairs, and meet at your guesthouse or a public spot. Teletubbies Hill as a second stop is an extra hour, $100.

Why here

Why choose Solo travel photoshoot in Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a solo traveller’s island — hostels in Toya Pakeh, rented scooters, people who came for three days and stayed a week — and almost every solo traveller leaves with the same photo: a selfie at the Kelingking railing with a stranger’s elbow in the corner. Nobody is around to hold the camera, and a phone on a tripod cannot climb a cliff stair with you. That is the gap this shoot fills. Instead of the most crowded viewpoint, we usually go somewhere that rewards having a second person: the blue staircase of Peguyangan hanging off the south-east cliffs, or the round grass hills inland known as Teletubbies Hill. Both are places where a lone figure in a big landscape is the whole point, and where you get directed rather than left to guess what to do with your hands.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Nusa Penida look like?

01

The route

We meet where you are staying or at a café you choose, and drive rather than ride: Penida’s roads to the south are steep and broken, and you do not want to arrive shaky. At Peguyangan the stair is painted blue and clings to the cliff above the sea, with a small water temple at the bottom. We stay on the upper flights, where the stair bends and the ocean fills the frame below you, and spend the half hour there: walking down towards the camera, sitting on a landing looking out, a wide frame from above that makes you small against the drop. We do not do the full descent and climb inside the session; it is long and hot. With an extra hour, we cross inland to Teletubbies Hill and finish among the rounded hills, alone on a ridge path.

02

The timing

Morning is the time for both spots. The Peguyangan cliff faces the open sea to the south-east and gets clean, low light from sunrise until about nine; after that the stair is exposed, hot and glaring, and the climb back up becomes a slog. Teletubbies Hill has no shade at all, so the earlier the better. Season changes the look more than anywhere else on the island: from December to March the hills turn a soft, bright green, while late in the dry season, around August to October, they are straw-brown and the light is hazier. If you are only on Penida for a night or two, book the first morning, so a rained-out session can move to the next.

FAQ — Solo travel photoshoot in Nusa Penida

Should I ride a scooter to the shoot on my own?

We would rather you did not. Roads to the south and east of Penida are narrow, steep and patched, with gravel on the bends, and scooter accidents are one of the island’s most common injuries. If you book the island transfer ($90), the photographer travels by private car and we can arrange to pick you up on the way; otherwise a local driver for the morning is easy to find.

What should I wear to Peguyangan, since there is a temple?

The stair leads to a sacred spring, so a sarong is expected at the bottom, and shoulders covered is respectful near the shrine. For the photos on the upper flights, a long, light dress or wide trousers in a plain colour look great against the blue paint and the sea; avoid blue that disappears into the stair. Wear shoes with grip and carry the photo shoes.

I am nervous about being photographed alone. How does it go?

You get direction from the first minute — where to walk, where to look, what to do with your hands — so you are never standing there waiting. The quieter spots help: with nobody queuing behind you, you can take a few tries at each frame. The first five minutes usually feel odd; by the second landing of the stair most people have stopped thinking about the camera.

Can I still have a photo at Kelingking?

Yes — it is one location like any other, best before 9 am or after 4 pm. Kelingking is on the west side and Peguyangan on the south-east, so the two do not fit into one half hour; choose one, or add extra hours and accept a long drive between them. For solo travellers on a day trip, Kelingking in the afternoon is the simpler plan.
