The route
Thirty minutes on the Gilis is one short loop on the west coast. We meet near the sand and begin in a palm-lined lane, walking and talking rather than posing, with a horse cart or a row of bicycles as background if one passes. A few minutes later we are at the water: walking in the shallows, sitting at the tideline while the photographer moves around you. The last stretch goes to golden hour facing Bali, with the low sun backlighting your hair and the strait turning gold — on Trawangan at the swings, timed for a gap between other visitors, on Air or Meno at a jetty or a fallen palm. Want a ride through the island first? That is the extra hour ($100).

The timing
Book the half hour that ends at sunset, which on the Gilis is roughly between 6 and 6.30 pm all year. Morning sessions work too: soft light on the east-facing beaches, glassy water and hardly anyone around before 8 am. From April to October the dry season keeps skies clear and Agung visible across the strait; from November to March expect humid afternoons and the occasional storm, which we watch on the radar and work around by shifting the start time. July and August are the busiest months on Trawangan, when the swings have short queues at sunset. In rough seas boats may be delayed, so keep the shoot away from your travel day.

02How do we get around the island during the shoot?
On foot and by bicycle, which is part of the charm. Motor vehicles are not used on the Gilis, so the lanes are quiet and you can rent bikes almost anywhere for a small fee. For longer hops, such as from the east side of Trawangan to the sunset coast, a cidomo horse cart is the local option. Our 30-minute route is planned so that nothing is more than a short walk apart and no time is lost in transit.
03What should a couple wear on the Gili Islands?
Coordinate rather than match: one of you in a light dress or skirt, the other in linen or a soft shirt, in tones that sit together, such as white with sand or blue with cream. Bright solids look good against turquoise water, while busy logos date quickly. Bare feet are normal on the beach and lanes. Bring a cover-up for walking through villages, as the local community is mostly Muslim and modest clothing is appreciated off the sand.
