The route

The plan is fixed the day before. The photographer walks Meno’s northern shore with you on WhatsApp, chooses a stretch where the light will fall right and the background is clean, and sends a pin and a photo of the exact spot: a fallen palm, a lone boat, a break in the shrubs. On the day they are in position fifteen minutes early. You arrive on foot or by bicycle as if out for an evening ride; the photographer shoots the approach from a distance on a long lens, the moment you stop, the kneel, the reaction and the hug, without moving closer. Once you look over — the agreed signal — they walk up, congratulate you, and the rest of the session becomes a relaxed couple shoot on the same beach as the light turns gold. For a sunrise proposal instead, we use Meno’s east side facing Gili Air and Lombok.

The timing

For a sunset proposal, aim for the moment about 30 to 40 minutes before the sun touches the horizon — usually around 5.30 to 6 pm. That leaves golden light for the reaction and enough time for the couple portraits before it gets dark. Sunrise is the more private option: on Meno’s east coast there is often nobody about before 7 am, and the sky behind Lombok turns pink. From April to October evenings are dependable; from November to March afternoon storms are common, so we keep a backup evening and watch the radar with you during the day. If the weather turns, we postpone rather than ask you to propose under a cloudburst — it is easy to make up a reason for a second sunset walk.

How does the photographer stay hidden on such a quiet island?

By not hiding at all. On a busy beach you can disappear in a crowd; on Meno someone crouching behind a bush would be obvious. The photographer dresses like any other visitor and sits further away than usual, often 30 metres or more, with a long lens that makes that distance invisible in the photos. Your partner sees a tourist in the shade, not a camera.

Why Gili Meno rather than Gili Trawangan for a proposal?

Privacy. Trawangan’s west coast is lined with bars and swings, and at sunset there will be people in the background of every frame, some of them filming you. Meno has very little nightlife and long empty beaches. If you are staying on Trawangan, Meno is a short island-hopping boat away; we can also find a quieter corner of Trawangan’s north coast if you would rather not cross.

Can you help with flowers, a table or decorations on the beach?

Decoration is not part of the photography package, and on Meno there is no road to bring a set-up in by car — anything arrives by bicycle or horse cart. Some beachfront hotels arrange a dinner set-up on the sand for their guests; ask yours. A simple proposal with nothing on the beach often photographs better than a staged one, and nobody guesses in advance.
