The route
We agree the anchorage with the captain the day before, because a boat that is still motoring at golden hour gives you engine noise and a sideways horizon. Once at anchor, the half hour starts at the bow: the two of you sitting on the edge with your legs over the side, then standing at the bowsprit with the islands ahead, shot from the deck behind so the rigging frames you. Next the sun deck, with its cushions and a low angle that puts nothing but sky and sea behind you. If the boat carries a tender, a few minutes in it off the stern give a frame of the whole phinisi with you in the foreground. Near Kalong Island, the evening ends with flying foxes streaming out of the mangroves overhead; it is too dark for portraits by then, but a silhouette of you on the bow under the moving sky is worth waiting for. Inside the cabin we shoot only if you ask, and only at the harbour, where there is daylight.
