The route
Your jeep comes down into the caldera from Cemoro Lawang after breakfast, around seven, which means the whole family has slept and eaten. We meet by the jeep, and the first frames happen around it: children in the open back, on the bonnet with a parent holding on, the family lined up in front with Batok behind — kids relax faster when they are doing something. Then we walk out onto the open sand for the group portrait, everyone in a row facing the cone, and let the children run back towards the camera, kicking up little clouds of ash. If they want to see the horses, the last minutes are there: a child on a pony led by its Tenggerese handler, a parent walking alongside. We do not take small children up the crater stairs — the steps are steep, the rim is narrow and the sulphur stings — and we keep everyone well away from the jeeps when they are moving.
