The route
There are two shapes for the morning. The sunrise version starts at a quiet rim point reached by jeep in the dark; you arrive wrapped up, the celebrant or a friend reading for you stands with their back to the caldera, and the vows begin as the sky colours, so the light arrives during the ceremony rather than after it. The savanna version is gentler: the jeep crosses the sea of sand after sunrise and climbs to the southern side, where rolling grass hills are empty and quiet by mid-morning; you say your vows on a crest with the hills falling away behind, in light that is warmer and kinder to a dress. In both, the 30 minutes cover the ceremony and the first portraits as a married couple. With extra hours, we add getting ready at your lodge in Cemoro Lawang — the dress, the coat, the small details — and a second location, so a sunrise ceremony can end with portraits on the sand or in the savanna.
