The route
For the Ratu Boko version we meet at the ticket gate about an hour before sunset; the site sits on a hill, so there is a short walk up stone paths to the palace terrace. The 30 minutes begin on the lawn in front of the great gateway: the symmetrical frame first, you standing in the central arch with open sky behind while the sun still lights the stone. As it sinks we move to the side of the gate for backlit portraits and silhouettes, and on a clear evening we turn north for Merapi on the horizon. The last minutes go to the low walls and old bathing pools on the slope, where the light is softer once the sun has gone. If you would rather shoot in the morning, the same half-hour works at Sumur Gumuling at opening, before the queue for the stairway forms. An extra hour ($100) lets you add a second landmark on the same side of the city.
