The route
The jeep collects you from your guesthouse in Cemoro Lawang around 3:30 and climbs the Penanjakan road; we get off at King Kong Hill rather than driving on to the top. The path from the jeep stop takes ten minutes by headlamp. We set up on the edge of the slope before the first blue appears, so you can stand in your coat, out of the wind, while it is still dark. The 30 minutes start when the sky over Bromo turns from blue to pink: a few wide frames that show all three volcanoes and the cloud in the caldera, then closer portraits with a long lens that stacks Semeru right behind your shoulder, and last, once the sun clears the eastern ridge, a backlit frame with steam lit gold. That is the session. If you add an extra hour ($100), the jeep takes us down into the caldera for the sea of sand while the light is still low.
