The route
Before the day, we send you a map pin and a photo of the exact spot — usually a ledge on King Kong Hill or a corner of the slope just off the main path, with Bromo, Batok and Semeru clear behind it — plus the signal you will give: taking off your hat, for example. On the morning, the photographer arrives separately, earlier than your jeep, and stands with the other early arrivals, camera on a long lens like any keen tourist. You walk up in the dark, find the spot as the blue light comes, and wait for the pink: that is when the volcanoes appear and the background is at its best. You give the signal; the photographer starts shooting from twenty or thirty metres away and keeps going through the reaction, the ring, the hug. Then they walk over, introduce themselves, and the rest of the half hour is a couple shoot on the rim as the sun comes up — with the ring in frame, and a coat back on.
