Why here

Why choose Drone video in Ubud?

Ubud is made for aerial video because its landscape is layered. A drone rising slowly from a riverbed passes through jungle canopy, then a band of mist, then clears the ridge to show terraces, villas and, on clear mornings, the volcanoes on the horizon. A shot like that only works in motion; a still frame flattens it. The Ayung gorge west of town is the best stage for it, with its steep walls and the river winding at the bottom, and the terraces to the north give long tracking shots along curved lines of rice. The flying is shaped by the valley itself: walls block line of sight and signal, so the pilot launches from high, open ground, usually at a villa or venue we have arranged, and keeps the drone where it can be seen.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Ubud look like?

01

The route

The pilot arrives at the launch point — a villa lawn or venue terrace on the rim of the Ayung valley, arranged in advance — about twenty minutes before first light to check the wind, the mist and any ceremony in the area. The first flights catch the gorge as the light arrives: a slow push along the river, then a rise through the mist to reveal the ridge. With the battery change, we move to the rice. A second launch point by the terraces gives low tracking shots along the dykes, a sideways slide past a line of palms and a top-down drift over flooded paddies. If you want to appear in the film, you walk a path or stand at a pool edge on cue while the drone circles. The edit follows the morning’s order, dark to light, and the raw clips come with it.

02

The timing

Fly from first light to about an hour after sunrise. That is when mist sits in the gorge, the air is calm and the low sun picks out the shape of every terrace; by mid-morning the haze flattens the view and visitors fill the paths. From April to October mornings are clearer and the volcanoes are more often visible on the horizon. From November to March the mist is thicker and the rice greener, but rain grounds the drone, so we keep a spare morning. Galungan and other temple festivals mean more ceremonies in the villages, and more places we must avoid.

FAQ — Drone video in Ubud

Is the airport no-fly zone a problem in Ubud?

No — Ubud lies well outside the restricted airspace around Ngurah Rai. Indonesian rules still apply: a height limit, the drone kept in sight, no flights over crowds, government sites, temples or ceremonies without permission. In Ubud the practical limits are the valley walls, which block line of sight, and finding open ground to launch from among the palms.

Do we need permission from a villa to fly over the gorge?

For launching from its grounds, yes, and much of the valley rim is private land. If you are staying in a valley villa, ask whether a drone is allowed; many agree for a short morning flight. Otherwise we arrange a launch point we have used before. We never hover over other villas’ pools or guests.

Can drone video be part of our wedding film?

Yes. Book Drone video alongside the wedding film, and the aerials are edited into it as well as delivered as their own 60–90 second piece. At a wedding we fly before guests arrive and during portraits, never over the ceremony crowd, and only where the venue agrees.

What can we do with the raw clips?

Everything usable from the flight comes ungraded in 4K, usually several minutes beyond the edit. Cut vertical reels from them, add them to a longer holiday film, or use them as background footage for a website. In Ubud the slow mist reveals and long tracking shots are especially useful as loops behind text.
