Why here

Why choose Drone video in Gili Islands?

The Gilis are one of the few places where a single aerial shot can tell the whole geography: three small islands in a row, each ringed with pale reef, the channels between them a darker blue, Lombok’s coast and Rinjani behind, Bali’s Agung across the strait the other way. That is the film this service is built to capture, and it is a moving story rather than a still one — a slow climb from the beach until the next island appears, a long track along the coast, a boat cutting a white wake across the channel. We fly from the south end of Gili Trawangan, the one spot with a little height and a clear line east over Meno and Air. The honest limit is distance: the drone must stay within the pilot’s sight, so we film the three islands from where they line up, rather than flying from one to the next.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Gili Islands look like?

01

The route

The pilot launches from open ground near the south coast before sunrise. The first flight is the reveal: a slow climb from the treetops while the camera tilts up to show Gili Meno and Gili Air lined up across the water, with Lombok’s hills catching the first light behind them. On the second battery the drone drops lower and tracks over the water along Trawangan’s east coast, offshore so it never passes over people, following the reef edge as the boats prepare for the day. If you want to be in the film, you walk or cycle along the beach for a few passes and the drone holds you small in the frame. The last minutes are spent on detail from above — anchored boats casting shadows on the sand, the colour change at the drop-off. You get the edited film and every raw clip.

02

The timing

Sunrise is the time for this film. The east-facing view from Trawangan puts the light behind Meno, Air and Lombok, the air is at its stillest, and Rinjani is most often visible in the first hour before haze builds. Sunrise on the Gilis is around 6 am, so the pilot is in position by 5.30. A sunset version looking west towards Agung is possible, but the wind across the strait is usually stronger by late afternoon, and the west coast is busy with people, which limits where we can fly. The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest air and water but stronger trade winds as the day goes on; in the wet season, November to March, dawn is often calm and dramatic, though rain can cancel a flight, so leave room for a second morning.

FAQ — Drone video in Gili Islands

Can the drone fly from Gili Trawangan to Gili Air?

No. Indonesian rules require the drone to stay within the pilot’s visual line of sight, and the islands are several kilometres apart. Instead we film from where they line up, so all three appear in one shot, and if you want close aerial footage of Gili Air or Meno too, we fly there on a separate session after crossing by boat. Over-water flights beyond sight are where most holiday drones are lost.

What do we do with the raw 4K clips?

Whatever you like. They are the full-length shots from the flight, ungraded, so you can cut your own version, use slices in reels or hand them to an editor making a longer travel film. The 60–90 second edit is the finished piece with licensed music and colour grading; the raw clips are the material it was made from.

Is the drone video possible on a windy day?

Up to a point. Light wind is fine and even helps clear the haze, but strong gusts over open water make footage shaky and flights unsafe, and the pilot will ground the drone rather than risk it. Wind on the Gilis is usually lowest at dawn, which is one reason we fly then. If the morning is too rough, we move the session to another day at no cost.

What does the drone video cost all in on the Gilis?

From $320 for 30 minutes of flying, the 60–90 second edit and the raw 4K clips. If the pilot has to cross from Bali or Lombok for your date, the island transfer is $90. Your boat tickets and any fee a hotel asks for launching from its grounds are paid separately; most of our launch points are public beach.
