The route
We meet on the north-west stretch of Gili Trawangan, past the busy swings, where the beach is narrower and the horizon is empty of bars. The first ten minutes are the frames that make this a Bali shoot: the photographer walks back up the beach with a long lens while you stand at the waterline, and Agung grows behind you as the distance stretches. Then we come in closer for portraits with the volcano soft in the background, a few walking frames along the tideline, and you sitting on the sand facing Bali so the strait and the mountain read over your shoulder. The last minutes are the sun going down beside Agung. Add an extra hour ($100) and we stay into the blue hour, when the volcano’s outline holds against a pink and violet sky for twenty minutes after the sun has gone.

The timing
Agung decides this shoot, and it is shy. In the dry season, roughly April to October, the volcano is usually clear in the late afternoon, though by midday haze over the strait can hide it completely, which is why we never book this session for the middle of the day. In the wet season, November to March, cloud often caps the summit by evening; on those days sunrise is worth considering, as Agung is sometimes visible at dawn even when it disappears later. Around March and September the sun sets almost behind the cone; in June it drops well to the right and in December to the left, so we shift where you stand to keep both in one frame. Sunset falls between about 6 and 6.30 pm all year.

01Why book a “Bali photoshoot” on the Gilis instead of on Bali?
Only if you are already going to the Gilis. On Bali itself the same service puts you at a rice terrace, a temple gate or a cliff. Here it gives you something Bali cannot: the island seen from outside, with its highest volcano as the backdrop. If you are not planning to cross the strait anyway, a session on Bali is simpler and cheaper, since there is no boat or transfer to arrange.
02What if Mount Agung is hidden by cloud on our evening?
It happens, mostly in the wet season. We check the view in the afternoon and, if the volcano is gone, offer to move the session to sunrise the next morning or to another evening at no cost. If you are leaving and cannot move it, we shoot the sunset anyway; a sky full of cloud over the strait still makes strong frames, but they will not show Bali, and we say that before we start.
03What is the full cost if we are staying on the Gilis?
The session is from $160 for 30 minutes and 15+ edited photos. If the photographer has to cross from Bali or Lombok for your date, that is the $90 island-transfer add-on. Moving around Gili Trawangan is on foot or by bicycle, so there is nothing to pay for transport on the island beyond a bike rental if you want one. Your own boat tickets and any island fee collected on arrival are paid separately.
04Can you also photograph us later on Bali in the same trip?
Yes, as a separate booking for a different day. Many people pair this evening with a morning on Bali at a rice terrace or a temple, so the gallery shows the island from both sides of the strait. We plan the two around your boat days, because crossings can run late in rough weather and we would rather not have a shoot depend on a boat arriving on time.
