Why here

Why choose Flying dress photoshoot in Bali?

The flying dress needs three things — wind or a skilled throw, open space, and a background that contrasts with the fabric — and different parts of Bali supply them in different proportions. Nusa Penida has all three at full strength: sea wind, sheer white cliffs and turquoise water, which is why the red dress at Kelingking became the famous image; it also has a fast boat, rough roads and queues. The Bukit cliffs give similar ocean and wind without the crossing. Ubud has almost no wind, so the train is thrown by hand, but its green terraces make warm colours glow. Canggu and the Cemagi coast give black sand and surf, a dark, graphic backdrop for white or pastel fabric. Temples, including Lempuyang, are not places for a backless gown. Pick the backdrop, then weigh the logistics.

How the shoot is planned

What does the shoot in Bali look like?

01

The route

On Nusa Penida the day starts with the first fast boat from Sanur, about forty minutes across; the island transfer add-on covers the photographer’s crossing and car. By car the west coast — Kelingking, Broken Beach — takes most of a day trip, so the shoot is one viewpoint done well, ideally early before the platforms fill. On the Bukit the plan is a clifftop in the last hour and a half of light, the sea breeze carrying the train, well back from any unfenced edge. In Ubud we reach the terraces twenty minutes before sunrise, change in the car and throw the train along a terrace edge as the light comes over the ridge. On the Canggu coast we work the black sand at Cemagi or Pererenan at sunset, with the surf behind. Each plan is one place for the 30 minutes; a second, nearby, is an extra hour at $100.

02

The timing

Coast and cliffs want the last hour and a half before sunset, when a steady sea breeze lifts the fabric and the light is warm; Nusa Penida is the exception on a day trip, where an early start beats the tour groups. Ubud wants sunrise, for mist and still air. The dry season, April to October, brings the steadiest trade winds, which is good for the dress and occasionally too strong on the Nusa Penida cliffs — on those days we shoot further back from the edge. From November to March, the sea crossing is more often rough and inland afternoons are wet, so a Bali-mainland plan with a morning start is the safer one.

FAQ — Flying dress photoshoot in Bali

Can we do Nusa Penida as a day trip just for the dress?

Yes, many people do. Expect an early boat from Sanur, an hour or more on rough roads to the west-coast viewpoints, a small entry fee, and a queue at Kelingking by mid-morning. The shoot is $290 plus the $90 island transfer for the photographer; your boat tickets are separate. Keep a spare day in case the crossing is cancelled.

Which dress colour suits which part of Bali?

Red, coral and emerald stand out against Nusa Penida’s turquoise and the blue ocean below the Bukit. Red and coral glow against Ubud’s green terraces. White, dusty pink and sky blue look strongest on Canggu’s black sand. You choose from photos when you book, and we bring a second option on the day.

Is there enough wind in Ubud for a flying dress?

Rarely, and it does not need it. Inland, the movement comes from an assistant throwing the train from just out of frame and the photographer catching it at its highest point. It takes a few attempts per frame, which is why Ubud dress shoots start at sunrise: the light is soft and the terraces are empty while we repeat the throw.

Can I wear the flying dress at Lempuyang?

Not at the temple gate. Lempuyang is an active temple where a sarong and sash are required, and a backless gown with a long train is not appropriate there. If you want both, do the temple in a sarong and the dress at a viewpoint or terrace elsewhere — which in practice means another region and another morning.
