Flying dress photoshoot in Bali: what it is, where to shoot, what it costs

A 30-minute shoot in a long flying gown over Bali terraces or cliffs: dress included, 15+ photos from $290. Where to go, which colour, how to prepare.

A flying dress photoshoot in Bali is a session built around a long, lightweight gown with a trailing train that is thrown into the air or caught by the wind, photographed against rice terraces, cliffs or the ocean. Ours runs 30 minutes, includes the dress, and costs from $290 for 15+ edited photos; an extra hour ($100) gives room for a second spot or classic portraits.

What a flying dress shoot actually is

The look became popular on social media: a woman in a vivid gown, the fabric flying several metres behind her over a green valley or a blue bay. The effect is not digital. The dress has a very long, light train, and an assistant or the photographer throws it at the right moment, or the wind lifts it on a cliff. A good shot takes several attempts, so the session is paced around short bursts of action and quick resets.

It is a signature Bali shoot because the island gives you the backdrops it needs within easy reach: terraced green slopes, jungle, black-sand beaches and some of the most dramatic sea cliffs in the region.

Where to shoot it

Ubud and the rice terraces

The classic version: emerald terraces, palm trees, sometimes mist in the valley at sunrise. Green behind a red, pink or yellow dress is the colour combination most people picture. Popular terraces get busy after mid-morning, so we start early. The Ubud flying dress shoot is the easiest to fit into a holiday, because it needs no boat and leaves the rest of your day free.

Nusa Penida and the cliffs

The dramatic version: the dress flying over a sheer drop with turquoise water below. Kelingking, Diamond Beach and Broken Beach are the usual choices. Wind on the cliffs helps the fabric fly, but it also makes timing harder. A Nusa Penida shoot is a full day trip with a fast boat and island roads, so plan it as the main event of that day. See the Nusa Penida flying dress shoot for how we organise it.

Beaches and the south coast

Black sand on the west coast and the cliffs of the Bukit Peninsula work well at sunset. The light is warm and the ocean breeze is often steady, which helps. It is a good option if you are staying in the south and want to avoid an early start.

Choosing a dress colour

  • Red is the most popular for a reason: it stands out against green terraces and blue sea alike.
  • Pink and coral look soft at sunrise and suit romantic, lighter edits.
  • Yellow and orange work beautifully against jungle and deep blue water.
  • White and pastels are elegant but can blend into bright skies; they work best with a darker backdrop.

Tell us your preferred colour and size when booking so the right dress comes with us.

How to prepare

  1. Sleep early. Sunrise starts in Ubud mean leaving your hotel in the dark.
  2. Wear simple, comfortable shoes for the walk; most frames are barefoot or with the dress covering your feet.
  3. Bring a light layer for the car ride and water for afterwards.
  4. Keep jewellery minimal. The dress is the statement.
  5. If you want hair and make-up, book it in advance; it adds time before the start.
  6. For a couple shoot, plan your partner's outfit in neutral tones so the dress stays the focus.

What the session feels like

Expect to walk to a few positions, hold still while the train is set, then move on a count. Most people feel awkward for the first five minutes and then relax once they see the first frames on the camera. We direct poses step by step, so no previous experience is needed. Children and partners can join for a few frames, and couples often add classic portraits at the end. If you want a full couple story with the flying dress as one chapter, a couple photoshoot or honeymoon photoshoot can be combined with the dress add-on.

Booking and timing

Sunrise slots are the most requested, so it helps to book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially in July, August and over the Christmas holidays. When you book, we confirm the location, the dress colour and size, and whether you want hair and make-up, which moves the start earlier.

Plan the shoot early in your trip rather than on the last day. If the weather turns, there is then room to move it to another morning without stress. For Nusa Penida, add the boat and the island roads to the plan: the session itself is 30 minutes, but the day around it is long. Our Nusa Penida guide walks through how that day works.

After the session, the edited gallery arrives online within 48–72 hours, with every photo in full resolution and ready for print or social media. If you want a few photos to post the same week, the express option gets them to you within 24 hours.

Weather and safety

Rain in the wet season usually comes in the afternoon, which is one more reason to shoot in the morning. Strong wind on cliffs is part of the look but we never put anyone close to an unfenced edge for a photo; the drama comes from the angle, not from the risk. If conditions on the day are unsafe or the light is lost to heavy cloud, we reschedule rather than shoot a weak session.

A note on photos at busy spots

At the most famous viewpoints other visitors are always around. We work around them with angles and timing, and some retouching of small background distractions is part of the edit. What we do not do is replace skies or composite fake landscapes; the photos look like the place you were in.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring my own flying dress?

No. The dress is included in the flying dress photoshoot. Tell us your size and preferred colour when booking.

Is Ubud or Nusa Penida better for a flying dress shoot?

Ubud gives you green rice terraces and is easy to fit into any day. Nusa Penida gives you dramatic sea cliffs but takes a full day with a fast boat. Choose by the look you want and how much time you have.

Can my partner be in the photos too?

Yes. Partners often join for part of the session. Neutral clothes keep the dress in focus, and classic couple portraits can be added at the end.

How soon do I get the photos?

The edited gallery is online within 48–72 hours. Express delivery in 24 hours is available for $50.
