## In short

A wedding film on the Gili Islands costs from $1,490 for 30 minutes of filming around the ceremony, with the vows recorded on separate microphones. You receive a 2–3 minute ceremony film, a 30-second teaser within a week, and the full film within 4–6 weeks. A longer day is added in extra hours at $100.

A wedding film is mostly remembered for what people said, and the Gilis are a good place to record it — with a few things to plan around. The good news is the quiet: no traffic, no scooters, and on most beaches no music until the evening. The challenges are particular to the islands. A steady breeze off the strait rattles a camera microphone. The surf is gentle but constant. At sunset, exactly when most ceremonies happen, the call to prayer sounds from the village mosques. So the vows are recorded on small lapel recorders worn by both of you and the celebrant, separate from the cameras, and the timeline is set so the words land before or after the call to prayer rather than under it. The base film is the ceremony told in two or three minutes; with extra hours it becomes the whole day.

## How the shoot is planned

Before the ceremony we fit the lapel recorders, check levels against the wind and agree a small signal with your celebrant for a pause if the call to prayer begins. Filming starts with the setting — the empty aisle on the sand, the arch moving in the breeze, guests arriving barefoot — then the walk down the aisle from a low angle so the sea is behind. During the vows a camera on a tripod holds the wide frame while the videographer moves with a second one for faces and hands, so the edit can cut between them without losing a word. Straight after, while guests gather for drinks, a few minutes with the two of you down the beach in the last light give the film its closing scene. With extra hours we add the morning — preparations, letters, the island waking up — and the evening: speeches recorded from the venue’s sound system, the first dance on the sand, and sparklers or lanterns over the water.

## Timing

Most Gili ceremonies face west for the sunset, which on these islands falls between about 6 and 6.30 pm through the year, and the evening call to prayer follows within a few minutes of it. For the cleanest audio, start the ceremony about an hour before sunset, so the vows are over well before the call and the golden light carries the portraits afterwards. A sunrise ceremony on an east-facing beach avoids the issue almost entirely and has the quietest sound of the day. The dry season, April to October, brings steadier but stronger breezes, which we handle with wind covers on the microphones; from November to March, keep a covered plan B with your venue for afternoon storms, and expect guests’ boats to be less punctual from December to February.

## Frequently asked questions

### Will the wind and waves spoil the sound of our vows?

Not if the vows are recorded on lapel microphones, which is how we do it. Each of you and the celebrant wears a small recorder under clothing, with a wind cover, so the voices are captured inches away while the waves stay in the background where they belong. The camera audio is kept as atmosphere and mixed in under the vows.

### What happens if the call to prayer starts during the ceremony?

It is part of island life, and many couples like having it in the film as a sense of place. If you would rather keep it out of the vows, we time the ceremony to finish before sunset and agree with your celebrant to pause briefly if it starts. A pause of a minute or two is easy to bridge in the edit, and nobody watching the film will notice.

### Can you film the whole wedding day on the Gilis?

Yes, with extra hours at $100 each. Because everything happens within walking distance on the islands, a full day usually needs fewer hours than on Bali, where crews spend time in the car. A typical Gili day — preparations, ceremony, portraits and the first part of the reception — is planned with your venue so the crew is where the moments are.

### Can we have a drone shot of the ceremony in the film?

Drone flights are not part of the wedding film package, and Indonesian rules do not allow flying over a group of people, which rules out hovering above your seated guests. Aerial footage of the beach and coastline before guests arrive, or of the two of you alone afterwards, is possible through the separate drone video service, flown by a licensed drone pilot.
