## In short

A holiday photoshoot in Bali costs from $130 for 30 minutes near where you are staying, with 15+ edited photos in 48–72 hours. On the west coast — Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran — it runs before sunset; in Sanur and Nusa Dua, which face east, sunrise is better; in Ubud, early morning. Travel within your area is included.

A holiday photoshoot is built on not travelling, so on a Bali-wide page the real question is what each base gives you within a few minutes of the door. The answer differs more than people expect. Seminyak and Legian put a wide west-facing beach at the end of the lane. Canggu adds black sand, surf and rice-paddy lanes behind the cafés. Sanur faces east, with calm water and a beach path made for an early walk. Nusa Dua is resort gardens and sheltered beaches; Jimbaran is a sunset bay lined with fishing boats. Ubud gives you a villa over a valley and a field path at the end of the street, and the Bukit gives you a cliff villa and coves down long stairs. Whichever you chose for the holiday already decides the light, the backdrop and the hour — which is exactly why the session can stay close.

## How the shoot is planned

The session starts at your gate or lobby. In Seminyak we walk down a lane to Petitenget or Batu Belig beach and spend most of the half hour at the waterline as the sky warms. In Canggu the same walk ends on black sand, or turns inland along a paddy path if the beach is crowded with surfers. In Sanur we meet at first light on the beach path, with jukung outrigger boats pulled up on the sand and the sun rising over the water. In Nusa Dua, if the resort welcomes outside photographers, we use its garden and beach; if not, the public beach nearby. In Ubud the villa itself — pool, terrace, the view — does most of the work, with a short walk to a field edge. On the Bukit we stay on the clifftop if the stairs down to the cove are too much for anyone in the group. One place, used well, then you go back to your holiday.

## Timing

Which way your beach faces decides the hour. The west coast, from Canggu down to Jimbaran, gets its best light in the last hour before sunset, around six all year. Sanur and Nusa Dua face east, so sunrise is the soft, empty hour there, and the evening light falls behind the hotels. Ubud has no sea horizon; early morning gives mist and cool air, late afternoon gives warm light through the palms. In the dry season, April to October, any of these is reliable. In the wet season, November to March, mornings are clearer than evenings across the island, so even west-coast guests sometimes switch to a morning start in the garden or on the beach.

## Frequently asked questions

### We are staying in Kuta. Is there anywhere nice nearby?

Yes, though Kuta beach itself is crowded at sunset. A short walk or drive north takes you to Legian and Double Six, where the beach is wider and calmer in the last light, or to the lanes and beach of Seminyak. If your hotel has a good pool or garden, that can be the quieter half of the session with an extra hour.

### We move from Ubud to the beach halfway through. Where should we shoot?

Wherever the place you are staying looks most like the holiday you will remember. A villa with a jungle view often wins; a beach hotel wins if the sand is a few steps away. A practical tip: shoot in the first half, so the 48–72 hour gallery arrives while you are still travelling and you can see whether you want a second session on the coast.

### Can we shoot inside our Nusa Dua or Jimbaran resort?

Often, but those are the areas where resorts are most likely to ask for notice or charge for an outside photographer. Send us the resort name when you book and ask the front desk; we tell you what we know. If the grounds are off limits, the public beach in front is usually open to everyone and is just as good in the right light.

### Sanur sunrise or Seminyak sunset — which is easier with a group?

Sanur at sunrise is quieter and calmer: the beach path is nearly empty, the water is flat and nobody is in the background. Seminyak at sunset has more colour and more people, including other shoots. If the group includes early risers or small children, go with Sanur; if it includes people who will not get up at half past five, Seminyak.
