## In short

A solo travel photoshoot in Uluwatu costs from $140 for 30 minutes, with 15+ edited photos online in 48–72 hours. We meet at your accommodation or at the top of the Suluban stairs and spend the session in the sea caves at low tide, with posing direction from the first minute. Travel within the Bukit is included.

People who come to Uluwatu alone usually come for a reason: the surf, a yoga retreat, a few weeks of working from a café with an ocean view. They also tend to leave with hundreds of sunset photos and none of themselves. A solo shoot here is built around one spot worked slowly, and on the Bukit the most rewarding one for a single person is Suluban, the cove at Blue Point. You reach it through a crack in the cliff; inside there are sea caves, turquoise pools at low tide and surfers paddling out to the main break. The caves frame one figure perfectly — two people start to crowd them — and the white rock bounces light back onto your face, so it even works in the middle of the day.

## How the shoot is planned

We meet at the top of the cliff, where the path to Suluban passes between cafés and surf shops, and use the first few minutes on the way down: the stairs squeezed between rock walls make a strong opening frame and give you time to get used to the camera. At the bottom we wait for the right moment of the tide and walk into the main cave. You stand in the mouth with the sea behind you, sit on a ledge with your feet in a rock pool, walk out towards the light. If you surf, bring your board — a frame of you heading out through the gap is the Uluwatu picture. The last minutes go to the wider beach, if the water allows, before we climb back up.

## Timing

At Suluban the tide decides, not the clock. The caves are only reachable at low to mid tide, and at high water the beach disappears entirely, so we pick the day and hour from a tide chart when you book. Light-wise, late morning to early afternoon works better here than almost anywhere else in Bali, because the limestone fills in the shadows; after about 3 pm the cove falls into shade. The dry season, April to October, brings big swell — fun to watch, but some days the lower caves stay wet even at low tide. In the wet season the water is calmer and the cove quieter.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it safe to meet a photographer alone?

Yes, and we make it easy to check. Before the day you get the photographer’s name, photo and phone number, and you choose the meeting point — your accommodation or a public place such as the top of the Suluban path, which is busy with cafés and surfers. You can share the plan with a friend. Suluban itself is never deserted in daylight.

### How difficult are the stairs down to Suluban?

Steep but short, with narrow, sometimes wet steps through the rock gap. Anyone used to normal walking manages fine in sandals with grip; heels and smooth soles do not. Bring a small bag rather than a big one, as you will want a hand free on the rail. The climb back up is the hot part, so carry water.

### Can you photograph me surfing?

Not in this format. Shots of you riding a wave need a long telephoto lens from the cliff or a photographer in the water, and an hour or more of waiting for the right set. The solo session gives you surf-lifestyle portraits — with the board, in the caves, heading out — which most people actually want on their wall.

### What if I want sunset photos too?

Add an extra hour ($100). Suluban is best before mid-afternoon, so the longer session starts in the caves and moves up to the clifftop above the break for the golden hour, a few minutes’ walk away. That gives two very different sets in one gallery: cool turquoise and stone, then warm light and open sky.
