## In short

A solo travel photoshoot in Labuan Bajo costs from $140 for 30 minutes at one spot near town — usually a hillside viewpoint over the harbour at sunset — and includes 15+ edited photos in an online gallery within 48–72 hours. No boat or national park fee is involved unless you choose to shoot on a trip.

Labuan Bajo runs on solo travellers: divers between liveaboards, backpackers on shared “open trip” boats, people halfway through a long loop of Indonesia. On a shared boat you are the one handing your phone around and taking pictures of couples, then coming home with a camera roll that has everyone in it except you. A solo session fixes that on land, which is the point. It needs no boat seat, no park ticket and no negotiation with a tour operator — just a time and a public place in a small, easy town. Thirty minutes is enough for one spot with a view over the harbour and the islands, and the photographer directs from the first minute, so you do not need to know what to do with your hands.

## How the shoot is planned

We meet on the waterfront about fifty minutes before sunset, at a café you pick or your hotel lobby, and walk the first few minutes along the harbour edge while you get used to the camera; the masts of the phinisi behind you make an easy, honest first frame. Then a short ride up to a hillside viewpoint such as Amelia Sea View, which looks straight down on the harbour and out to the islands. The half hour is spent there: standing portraits with the boats below, sitting on the slope with your knees up, a few frames walking towards the edge, then the sunset itself, with you as a silhouette against the sky and the bay. Afterwards the evening is yours — the night seafood stalls at Kampung Ujung are a ten-minute ride down, and that is dinner, not part of the shoot. If you would rather keep it close, the harbour front alone works for the whole session.

## Timing

Book the session for the evening after your boat trip, not the one before. Boat days here move with the weather and the operator’s schedule, and a shoot pinned to the night before a 4 am departure is the first thing to get squeezed. The light window is the last forty minutes of the day; in Labuan Bajo the sun goes down a little earlier than in Bali, between roughly 5:50 and 6:20 pm depending on the month. In the dry season, April to November, sunsets are reliable and the hills behind town turn brown from July. In the wet months showers tend to come in bursts and clear; a cloudy evening still gives soft, even light on the harbour front, so we only move the session for real rain.

## Frequently asked questions

### I am on a shared open-trip boat. Can the photographer come along?

Sometimes. Shared trips sell seats, and in high season many are full, so the photographer needs a paid seat like anyone else and the operator has to agree. You would also be photographed around twenty strangers, which limits where we can point the camera. For most solo travellers the town session gives better photos for less; if you want Padar, a private boat is the realistic option.

### Is Labuan Bajo comfortable for meeting a photographer alone?

It is a small town where the waterfront and the sunset viewpoints are busy with locals and visitors every evening, so the session never takes you anywhere isolated. You get the photographer’s name and WhatsApp before the day, and the route is agreed in writing. The town is fairly conservative, so a dress or shorts are fine but beachwear is for the islands.

### Can you photograph me snorkelling or diving?

Not underwater — this package is shot above the surface. What does work is the moment around the water: on Kanawa’s jetty, where the reef is visible from the planks, or on the dive boat’s deck in a wetsuit with the islands behind. Those need a boat day and the photographer’s seat, which we quote in advance.

### I leave on a liveaboard the next morning. Will I get the photos in time?

The standard gallery takes 48–72 hours, and mobile signal at sea is patchy, so add express delivery at $50 and the gallery arrives within 24 hours — usually while you still have hotel Wi-Fi. Otherwise it simply waits for you when you are back in range.
