Then we walk north along the coast path as the sun comes up: you on the sea wall with your feet over the water, pushing a bicycle along the sand, sitting in an empty beach café before it opens. We finish in the shallows with the low sun side-lighting you, which flatters far more than the overhead light of a dive-boat selfie. If you want a second outfit or the sunset coast as well, an extra hour ($100) covers it.

## Timing

Sunrise on the Gilis is roughly between 6 and 6.20 am through the year, and on Gili Trawangan’s east coast the useful light runs until about 7.30, after which the beach fills with boats loading for snorkel trips. The night before matters too: Trawangan has a lively evening, and a session at dawn after a late night shows in the photos, so plan a quiet one. From April to October mornings are reliably clear and Rinjani is often visible; from November to March the mornings are still the safest time of day, because storms tend to build after lunch. If you are on a dive course, book the morning of a rest day rather than the day after deep dives, when an early start is the last thing you want.

### Is it safe to meet a photographer alone at dawn?

You get the photographer’s name, photo and WhatsApp before the day, and you choose where to meet: your accommodation, the harbour or another public spot. The east coast of Gili Trawangan is not deserted at dawn either — fishermen, early runners and staff setting up cafés are around. You can share your live location with a friend during the session, and you can end it at any point.

### I am awkward in front of a camera. Will 30 minutes be enough?

Usually yes, because we keep you moving rather than holding poses: walking, pushing a bike, stepping into the water. The first five minutes are always the stiffest, which is why they happen during the dawn frames where you are mostly a silhouette anyway. By the time the light is on your face you will have stopped thinking about the camera.

### Can you include my snorkel or dive gear in the photos?

Yes, as props on land and at the waterline: mask pushed up on your head, fins in hand, sitting on a boat at the shore. Underwater photography is not part of this session, so if you want frames in the water with turtles, ask before booking and we will tell you honestly what is possible on your date.

### How much does it cost if I am island-hopping?

The session is from $140 for 30 minutes and 15+ edited photos on whichever island you are on that morning. If the photographer has to cross from Bali or Lombok for your date, the island transfer is $90.
