## In short

A proposal photographer in Yogyakarta costs from $290: a scouted spot, a hidden photographer with a long lens and 15+ edited photos of the question and a short couple shoot afterwards, delivered in 48–72 hours. The usual setting is Candi Ijo at sunset, or a Mangunan viewpoint at sunrise. Entry tickets are paid separately.

A proposal needs somewhere that feels like an occasion and where you can be almost alone, and Yogyakarta’s famous golden-hour spots are neither quiet nor private: dozens of people line Punthuk Setumbu at sunrise, and the Ratu Boko gateway has a crowd at sunset. Candi Ijo is different. It is the highest temple site in Yogyakarta, a small group of ninth-century shrines on terraces climbing a hill east of the city, with the whole plain spread below and the sun going down over it. It sees a fraction of the visitors of the big temples, so a photographer with a long lens can pass as one more traveller. For couples who prefer a sunrise, the viewpoints of Mangunan in the southern hills, where mist fills the river valley at dawn, are the alternative.

## How the shoot is planned

Days before, we walk the site and send you a pin and a photo of the exact spot: at Candi Ijo, usually the upper terrace where the stone edge opens onto the plain and the sun sets in front of you. We agree the plan on WhatsApp — when you will arrive, a signal such as you taking off your sunglasses, and a fallback if someone is standing exactly where you planned to kneel. On the day the photographer is already there, sitting on a lower terrace with a long lens and looking like any visitor. You walk up, take in the view, give the signal and ask. We photograph the moment from a distance, without stepping in, then wait until you are ready before coming over to say hello. The rest of the session is a short couple shoot on the terraces in the last light, still with the ring on and the nerves gone.

## Timing

Candi Ijo faces west, so the moment to ask is about twenty minutes before sunset, which is between roughly 5.30 and 6 pm all year in Yogyakarta. Check that the site is still open at that hour on your date; we confirm the current closing time when we scout. The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest skies and the best chance of a sharp horizon. In the wet season, afternoons often cloud over or storm, so the Mangunan sunrise, around 5.15 to 5.45 am, becomes the safer plan; the valley mist there is most reliable in the dry months too. Avoid weekends and Indonesian holidays, when local visitors come up the hill for the same sunset.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can we decorate the spot with flowers or a sign?

Not at Candi Ijo. It is a heritage site, and set-ups with flowers, candles or letters need the management’s permission, which is rarely practical for a surprise. A ring box and a small bouquet in your bag are fine. If a decorated set-up matters to you, a hotel terrace or a private garden is the better venue, and we can photograph the proposal there instead.

### What if my partner notices the photographer?

At a temple people with cameras are everywhere, so a photographer sitting on a lower terrace and pointing a lens at the view is unremarkable. We never approach you before the signal or call out, and we keep a distance at which faces are still sharp with a long lens. If something gives the game away, we adapt rather than leave.

### What happens if it rains on the day?

We agree a weather call by WhatsApp that afternoon. If the sky is hopeless, we move to the next evening, or switch to a sunrise at Mangunan, at no extra cost. If you are leaving and it has to be that day, we pick a covered spot nearby with you in advance, so the plan B is ready rather than improvised.

### Can we send the photos to our families the same evening?

The full gallery arrives in 48–72 hours as standard. If you want to share it sooner, the $50 express add-on puts every edited photo online within 24 hours — usually the following evening. Many couples simply call home that night with the news and send the photos a day later, which keeps the surprise for the gallery.
