## In short

A proposal photographer at Mount Bromo costs from $290 for 30 minutes, covering the proposal itself and a couple shoot straight after, with 15+ edited photos in 48–72 hours. We plan it at a quieter sunrise viewpoint such as King Kong Hill, not the crowded Penanjakan terrace. Park entry and the jeep are paid separately.

A sunrise tour is the perfect cover for a proposal. Your partner expects to be woken at three, bundled into a jeep and driven up a mountain in the dark — nobody suspects anything, because that is simply what everyone does at Bromo. The difficulty is the opposite of most proposals: not hiding the photographer, but finding a moment that belongs to the two of you on a ridge shared with hundreds of strangers. On the main Penanjakan terrace you would be kneeling among tripods and selfie sticks. So we plan it somewhere quieter on the rim, at a point where the photographer can stand among other tourists with a long lens and be completely invisible, and where the volcanoes line up behind you at the moment the sky turns. Then, once the answer is yes, the same photographer comes over and the session becomes a short couple shoot, with the cold forgotten.

## How the shoot is planned

Before the day, we send you a map pin and a photo of the exact spot — usually a ledge on King Kong Hill or a corner of the slope just off the main path, with Bromo, Batok and Semeru clear behind it — plus the signal you will give: taking off your hat, for example. On the morning, the photographer arrives separately, earlier than your jeep, and stands with the other early arrivals, camera on a long lens like any keen tourist. You walk up in the dark, find the spot as the blue light comes, and wait for the pink: that is when the volcanoes appear and the background is at its best. You give the signal; the photographer starts shooting from twenty or thirty metres away and keeps going through the reaction, the ring, the hug. Then they walk over, introduce themselves, and the rest of the half hour is a couple shoot on the rim as the sun comes up — with the ring in frame, and a coat back on.

## Timing

The moment to propose is the ten minutes before the sun appears, roughly 5:15–5:30 Java time, when the sky behind the volcanoes is pink and orange and faces are still soft. Not earlier — in full darkness there is nothing behind you — and not after the sun clears the ridge, when the backlight is harsh and the crowd is moving. Choose a weekday morning between May and October for the best odds of a clear sky and fewer people. If you have a fixed date that matters, such as an anniversary, keep the next morning as a plan B and tell us; cloud on the rim is common enough from December to February that a backup is not paranoia.

## What is included

The Proposal photographer package in Mount Bromo covers: 15+ edited photos — the proposal and the couple shoot after it; A spot scouted in advance and marked for you on a map; A hidden photographer with a long lens; A signal and a fallback plan agreed over WhatsApp; Private online gallery within 48–72 hours. Nothing is added to the price after the shoot. Permits worth knowing about: Penanjakan viewpoint — national park entry fee (higher at weekends and holidays) plus 4×4 jeep hire; drone use needs park permission; King Kong Hill — covered by the national park entry; reached by jeep on the Penanjakan road; Sea of Sand (Pasir Berbisik) — covered by park entry; flares, smoke bombs and fireworks are banned after the 2023 savanna fire; Savanna Teletubbies — covered by park entry; jeep access via the southern caldera track; Bromo crater rim — covered by park entry; horses to the foot of the stairs are paid separately; closed when the alert level rises; Madakaripura waterfall — entry ticket and a local guide, paid on site; can close in the wet season for flash-flood risk.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I keep it a surprise with all the logistics?

Book the sunrise tour as you normally would; the jeep, the early start and the viewpoint are exactly what your partner expects. Everything about the photographer goes through you on WhatsApp. On the morning, you only need to walk to the pinned spot rather than following the crowd to the top — easy to explain as wanting fewer people around.

### What if there is no phone signal on the rim?

Signal on the rim can be patchy, so we never rely on messages in the moment. The spot, the signal and the fallback are fixed the day before; the photographer will be in position whether or not you can text. If you are delayed, they wait — the light stays good for a while after the first colour.

### My hands will be freezing. Any tips for the ring?

Keep the ring box in an inside pocket, not a coat pocket you will be pulling gloves in and out of. Wear thin gloves you can slip off with your teeth, and take them off only at the signal. Fingers shrink in the cold, so if the ring is borderline, it will be loose at dawn — check it on a warm finger later.

### Could we propose in the sea of sand instead?

Yes, and it is easier to make private: after sunrise the caldera floor is wide enough to find space, and the light is warm and low around 6:30–7:30. The trade-off is that your partner will not expect a stop there, so it needs a reason, such as a jeep photo stop. The price and the 30 minutes are the same.
