## In short

A honeymoon photoshoot in Labuan Bajo costs from $220 for 30 minutes, usually on your phinisi at golden hour while at anchor, with 15+ edited photos delivered in 48–72 hours. The charter, the photographer’s berth or seat on it and national park fees are separate. Sunrise the next morning is an extra hour at $100.

Most honeymooners who come this far east come for one thing: a night or two on a wooden phinisi, waking at anchor in a bay with no other lights. That boat is the honeymoon, and it is also the best set in the region — teak decks, rigging, a bow that points at the islands, and a horizon that belongs to you. A session on board catches what a day trip cannot: the slow hour before sunset when the boat swings on its anchor, the deck empty except for the two of you. The honest complication is space. A phinisi is small, and a photographer on board overnight shares it with you, so we keep the shooting to agreed slots and stay out of the way the rest of the time. If you would rather not share the boat at all, the session can happen before departure, at the harbour, or on the first afternoon of a short route.

## How the shoot is planned

We agree the anchorage with the captain the day before, because a boat that is still motoring at golden hour gives you engine noise and a sideways horizon. Once at anchor, the half hour starts at the bow: the two of you sitting on the edge with your legs over the side, then standing at the bowsprit with the islands ahead, shot from the deck behind so the rigging frames you. Next the sun deck, with its cushions and a low angle that puts nothing but sky and sea behind you. If the boat carries a tender, a few minutes in it off the stern give a frame of the whole phinisi with you in the foreground. Near Kalong Island, the evening ends with flying foxes streaming out of the mangroves overhead; it is too dark for portraits by then, but a silhouette of you on the bow under the moving sky is worth waiting for. Inside the cabin we shoot only if you ask, and only at the harbour, where there is daylight.

## Timing

The light to plan around is the last hour before sunset at anchor; most overnight routes reach their evening anchorage by mid-afternoon, which suits it. For the season, April to June and September to November are the honeymoon sweet spots — calm anchorages and clear evenings. July and August are the busiest months, and a southerly wind can set boats rolling at some anchorages, which makes standing shots on the bow harder. December to March is lush and quiet, but sailings may be suspended in high waves, especially in January and February; if your honeymoon dates fall then, book a route with a spare day and keep a land-based session in town as the fallback.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the photographer have to stay overnight on our boat?

Only if you want both the evening and the next sunrise, or the anchorage is too far from town to return. In that case the photographer needs a berth or a sleeping place on deck, which the boat operator prices; we agree it in advance. For a single golden-hour session, a route that anchors closer to Labuan Bajo lets the photographer join for the afternoon only.

### Private charter or a shared phinisi — does it matter for photos?

A great deal. On a shared boat other guests are on the deck at golden hour, and we cannot ask them to move or photograph them without consent, so the frames get tight. A private charter, even a small one, gives you the whole bow. If you are booking a shared cabin trip, tell us the boat and we work with the corners that stay quiet.

### Can we do the session at our hotel instead of on a boat?

Yes. Several hotels on the hills north and south of town have pools and terraces looking west over the bay, which gives a sunset honeymoon frame with no boat logistics. Check that your hotel allows an outside photographer on its grounds; some ask for notice. An extra hour at $100 lets you combine the hotel with Sylvia Hill nearby.

### Is the sea calm enough for photos on deck?

At a sheltered anchorage, usually yes — the boat moves gently and we shoot with fast shutter speeds and keep you seated or holding the rail near the bow. While under way in open water it is a different story, and we never ask you to stand on the bowsprit with the boat pitching. Safety on deck outranks any frame.
