## In short

A flying dress photoshoot in Uluwatu costs from $290 for 30 minutes, with the dress included and 15+ edited photos delivered in 48–72 hours. We shoot on an open clifftop such as Karang Boma in the golden hour, using the sea wind to lift the train. A small local access fee at the headland is paid on the day.

A flying dress needs two things: open sky behind it and wind to carry the fabric. Inland, the movement has to be thrown by hand; on the Bukit the dry-season wind blows steadily across the clifftops and does half the work. That makes the high grassy headlands near Uluwatu one of the most natural places in Bali for this shoot. Karang Boma is the one we use most: a broad, flat headland with nothing behind you but the Indian Ocean, the line of cliffs running towards the temple, and enough space for the train to stretch out without catching on anything. The colours behave differently here than in the rice fields — red and coral burn against the blue, and white glows when the sun is low behind it.

## How the shoot is planned

You arrive already changed, or change in the car at the top of the access track. The assistant carries the train across the grass while the photographer reads the wind: the dress has to blow away from the camera side, so the first minutes are spent finding the angle where wind, sun and cliff line up. Then the work is short bursts — you stand still, the train is released on a count of three, we shoot the second it peaks, and repeat. Wide frames with the headland and ocean for scale, closer frames with fabric filling the sky, a walking sequence along the grass. Nobody goes within several metres of the edge; the “on the brink” look comes from a long lens and a low angle, not from risk.

## Timing

Start around ninety minutes before sunset: the light is warm, the wind is still up, and the sun sits low enough to backlight the fabric. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the best time of year — clear skies and the most reliable breeze, though on the windiest days hair needs to be tied back and veils stay in the car. From November to March the wind is lighter and more variable, so the assistant throws the train more often, and afternoon storms can force a move to another evening. On any date, a blue-sky day with a few clouds on the horizon makes the strongest frames.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which dress colour works best on the Uluwatu cliffs?

Warm, saturated colours — red, coral, fuchsia — contrast most with the blue ocean and pale grass. White and pastels look ethereal backlit at sunset but blend into a hazy sky. Avoid deep blue and turquoise, which disappear into the sea. You choose from the wardrobe photos in advance, and we bring a second colour as a backup.

### Is it safe to shoot a flying dress on a cliff with no fence?

Yes, because nobody stands near the edge. A long train in a strong wind pulls hard, so you always stay several metres back on flat ground, and the assistant holds the train until the moment of the throw. The dramatic “at the edge” frames are made with a telephoto lens from the side, which compresses the distance.

### Can my partner be in the flying dress photos?

Yes, at no extra cost. Couples frames work best with the partner in simple, light clothing so the dress stays the focus. The 30 minutes are shared, so if you want plenty of solo frames and plenty together, add an extra hour ($100). For proposals in a flying dress, tell us in advance so we can plan the reveal.

### Why not do the flying dress on the beach below the cliffs?

Because the coves are sheltered. The same cliffs that make them beautiful block the wind and throw shade across the sand from mid-afternoon, so the dress hangs instead of flying. A beach works better with a reel or a couple session. For the flying dress, height and open sky are what you are paying for.
