## In short

A flying dress photoshoot in Labuan Bajo costs from $290 for 30 minutes with the dress included, usually on a savanna hill above the bay at sunset, and 15+ edited photos arrive in 48–72 hours. A Padar sunrise version is possible, with the boat, the photographer’s seat and park fees paid separately.

A flying dress needs two things: open space and wind. Labuan Bajo has both in quantities Bali rarely does. The hills around the bay are bare savanna, with nothing to snag a train and nothing behind you but sky, sea and islands; and from mid-year a steady breeze comes off the water every afternoon, enough to lift several metres of chiffon without anyone throwing it. The colour story is strong too. From July the grass turns gold-brown, and a red or coral dress against it, with blue water below, is the contrast this shoot is famous for. Padar is the obvious stage, but it means carrying the dress up a steep stairway among crowds. A hill above town at sunset gives the same savanna, the same wind and an easier half hour — which is why it is our usual recommendation here.

## How the shoot is planned

We drive up about forty minutes before sunset and you change into the dress in the car, with sandals on for the short walk. The first thing we do is read the wind: the train always flies downwind, so we place you with the breeze at your back and the bay on one side, and the dress streams out across the frame rather than into your face. The half hour has three set-ups. A wide frame from below, with you on the crest and the train against open sky. A side-on frame along the ridge, the dress stretched horizontally over gold grass, the islands behind. And, as the sun touches the water, a backlit frame where the light comes through the fabric and turns it translucent. On calm evenings, the train is lifted and released from just out of frame on a count. On Padar, the same set-ups happen on the upper landings at first light, after you have carried the dress up in its bag.

## Timing

Wind is the reason to choose the season. From about June to September the afternoon breeze is reliable, and the dress flies on its own; in July and August it can be strong enough on exposed ridges that we shoot further from the edge and keep the train shorter. October and November usually bring gentler air and clearer skies — ideal for colour, with a little help throwing the train. The wet season, December to March, has green hills and more still evenings, which suits white or emerald dresses but means more lifting by hand. Time of day matters as much as the month: the last forty minutes before sunset give warm backlight through the fabric, and in Labuan Bajo that window opens around 5:10–5:40 pm.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which dress colour works best in Labuan Bajo?

Against the gold savanna of July to November, red, coral and deep orange are the strongest; white glows at sunset but can look washed out at midday. Against green hills in the wet season, red still works, and emerald or white look fresh. Avoid yellow and beige in the dry months — they disappear into the grass.

### Can I wear the flying dress on a boat?

At anchor, yes — the bow of a phinisi with the train streaming off the side is a striking frame, though rigging and railings limit the angles. Under way, no: a long train near the edge of a moving boat is a safety risk. A boat session needs the photographer’s seat, quoted in advance; an extra hour at $100 adds it to a hill shoot.

### Is it ever too windy?

Yes, on the most exposed ridges in July and August. A five-metre train becomes a sail and can pull you off balance, so we stay well back from any drop, shorten the train by tying part of it, and shoot from the sheltered side of the hill. If the gusts are unsafe, we move the session to another evening at no cost.

### Do you bring the dress up Padar, or do I?

We carry it in a garment bag, along with a spare in a second colour, so you climb with only water and a phone. You change at the top, and we gather the train between frames so it never touches the dusty steps. Allow a few extra minutes for changing — the 30 minutes start when you are dressed.
