## In short

A family photoshoot in Uluwatu costs from $180 for 30 minutes, with 15+ edited photos online in 48–72 hours. For children we usually choose calm, flat beaches — Jimbaran Bay in the late afternoon or Nusa Dua in the early morning — rather than the cliffs and stair-access coves. Travel around the Bukit is included in the price.

The things that make Uluwatu dramatic are the things that make it awkward with small children: unfenced cliff edges, hundreds of steps down to the coves, heavy surf and monkeys at the temple. So a family session on the Bukit goes where the peninsula is gentle. Jimbaran Bay, on its north-western side, is a long sweep of soft sand with almost no waves, wooden fishing boats pulled up on the beach and a straight path from the car. On the eastern side, the resort beaches of Nusa Dua sit behind a reef that keeps the water flat as a pool. Children can run, paddle and dig while we photograph them, and nobody has to carry a toddler up a staircase in the heat.

## How the shoot is planned

At Jimbaran we meet on the sand about an hour before sunset, near the fishing boats at the quieter southern end. The first ten minutes are for the whole family together while everyone is still clean and patient: standing in a line by a painted hull, sitting on the sand, the youngest on a parent’s shoulders. Then we let the children go and follow them — running at the waterline, chasing small waves, inspecting the boats — and pull parents into the frame for a hug or a swing between two hands. A short break for water comes halfway, and the last frames are of the whole family walking along the shore towards the sun. Restaurants start setting tables on the sand at dusk, so if you have booked dinner there, we can finish right at your table.

## Timing

With small children the light has to fit the nap, not the other way round. Jimbaran faces west, so its best hour is before sunset, from around 5 pm, when the heat has dropped. Nusa Dua faces east and is at its best from sunrise to about 8 am — ideal for families whose children wake at six anyway. Midday is too hot and too bright for everyone. The dry season, April to October, gives the clearest evenings; from November to March afternoon showers are common, so a morning slot in Nusa Dua is the safer choice then. Jimbaran sits under the airport approach, so planes passing overhead are part of the evening.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the cliff at Uluwatu Temple suitable for a family shoot?

With teenagers, yes; with toddlers we do not recommend it. The paths are crowded at sunset, the edges are high, and the monkeys target anything a child is holding. If the temple matters to you, we can stop there briefly with older children and do the relaxed part of the session on a beach.

### Can you photograph us at our resort in Nusa Dua?

Usually, but check with the resort first. Some Nusa Dua resorts ask for advance notice of an outside photographer and a few charge a fee, which is paid to them and is not part of our price. The beach in front of most resorts is public, so if the grounds are off limits we simply shoot on the sand.

### Our baby needs feeds and naps. How flexible is the session?

Very. Tell us the baby’s rhythm when you book and we set the start time around it. If a feed or a meltdown happens mid-session, we pause; a few minutes off the clock is normal with families. For longer breaks or a big family group, an extra hour ($100) takes the pressure off completely.

### Can grandparents with limited mobility join?

Yes, and that is another reason we choose Jimbaran or Nusa Dua. The car can stop close to the sand, the ground is flat, and there is shade from trees and boats for anyone who needs to sit between frames. We plan multi-generation group portraits first, so older relatives can rest while the children play.
