## In short

A family photoshoot in Ubud costs from $180 for 30 minutes and gives you 15+ edited photos online within 48–72 hours. We usually start in your villa garden and walk to a flat rice-field path nearby, with breaks for water and shade. Travel within the Ubud area is included. The steep Tegallalang terraces are better left for older children.

Ubud is not the obvious family choice — there is no beach to dig in, and the famous terraces are a long run of steep, muddy steps that toddlers and grandparents do not enjoy. But families who stay here usually have something the coast cannot match: a villa garden with lawn and shade, and rice fields at the end of the lane where ducks wade in the water and frogs jump off the path. Children understand that kind of place immediately. So this session is planned for the flat and the familiar — your own garden first, then a level field path a few minutes away — rather than for the Instagram viewpoint, and the photographs end up full of children doing things instead of standing still.

## How the shoot is planned

The photographer arrives ten minutes early to meet the children before any camera comes out. The first part is in the villa: everyone on the daybed or the lawn, the little ones in the pool steps, a grandparent reading in the shade — group frames done quickly while patience is fresh. Then we walk out of the gate to the nearest level paddy path, picked during a short check the week before, and let the children lead: chasing ducks along the irrigation channel, crouching over a frog, being swung between parents with the palms behind. The group portrait in the field comes last, when everyone is warm and laughing. If a toddler has had enough after fifteen minutes, we stop; the frames we already have are usually the ones you will print.

## Timing

Around 7 am suits most families: children are fresh after breakfast, the air in the valley is still cool, and the fields are at their quietest. If the youngest naps late in the morning, the hour before sunset works too, though mosquitoes come out near the water at dusk, so apply repellent twenty minutes beforehand. In the wet season the fields are greenest but paths turn to mud, so we stay on paved or grassy edges and keep a towel in the bag. School holidays, especially July and August, are the busiest in Ubud — book a week or two ahead for those dates.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can we bring a stroller?

To the garden part, yes. On rice-field paths a stroller rarely goes far — the dykes are narrow and often muddy — so a baby carrier works better, and it photographs nicely too. When we check the route before the day, we look for a path a parent can walk comfortably with a baby in arms and a toddler by the hand.

### Is Tegallalang a good idea with small children?

For children over about eight who enjoy a walk, it can be fun at sunrise. With toddlers we usually advise against it: the terraces are steep, the steps uneven and wet, the drive and the early start are long, and from mid-morning it is crowded. A level field near your villa gives the same green backdrop without anyone being carried up a hill in tears.

### Three generations are coming. Will the shoot work for grandparents?

Yes, and Ubud suits it better than most places, because the session can stay in the villa garden where there are chairs, shade and no stairs. We do the full group first, then smaller combinations — grandparents with grandchildren, siblings, each family unit — while others rest. Only those who want to walk come out to the fields.

### What if a child gets upset or it starts to rain?

Then we pause. Thirty minutes is planned with breaks, and the villa is always a step away. If a downpour takes the morning, the shoot moves to another day of your stay free of charge; if a child is simply not up to it, tell us and we look for another slot that week. For families who want a calmer pace overall, an extra hour ($100) takes the pressure off without making anyone pose for longer.
