## In short

A family photoshoot at Mount Bromo costs from $180 for 30 minutes, with 15+ edited photos in 48–72 hours. For young children we shoot in the sea of sand around 7:00–8:30, after the cold pre-dawn, rather than at the sunrise rim. Park entry, the jeep and any horse rides are paid locally and are not included.

Most Bromo advice is written for adults who can take a 3 am start and a freezing viewpoint in their stride. Families need a different plan, and an honest one. Small children standing in the dark on a rim at over 2,700 metres, in near-freezing wind and a crowd, rarely make for happy photographs. What does work is the caldera floor an hour or two later: the sun is up, the air has warmed by several degrees, there is room to run, and Bromo gives children things they never forget — a jeep ride across a desert, horses waiting on the sand, a volcano you can hear. A family session here is built around that second half of the morning. If your children are older and want the sunrise, we can add it; if they are toddlers, we suggest letting them sleep and meeting at the sand.

## How the shoot is planned

Your jeep comes down into the caldera from Cemoro Lawang after breakfast, around seven, which means the whole family has slept and eaten. We meet by the jeep, and the first frames happen around it: children in the open back, on the bonnet with a parent holding on, the family lined up in front with Batok behind — kids relax faster when they are doing something. Then we walk out onto the open sand for the group portrait, everyone in a row facing the cone, and let the children run back towards the camera, kicking up little clouds of ash. If they want to see the horses, the last minutes are there: a child on a pony led by its Tenggerese handler, a parent walking alongside. We do not take small children up the crater stairs — the steps are steep, the rim is narrow and the sulphur stings — and we keep everyone well away from the jeeps when they are moving.

## Timing

Plan the session for 7:00–8:30. Before that it is cold and crowded; after nine the wind gets up and lifts dust, which children hate in their eyes. May to October is dry, with clear mornings, but the coldest nights fall in July and August, exactly when European and Indonesian school holidays bring the biggest crowds — book a weekday. December to March is milder and the savanna is green, though cloud is more frequent and rain usually comes after midday. Whatever the month, give yourselves two nights near the rim: the drive up from Surabaya or Malang is long with children, and nobody should face a photoshoot the morning after a three-hour mountain road.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Bromo suitable for toddlers and babies?

The caldera floor, by jeep, after sunrise — yes, with warm layers, a carrier rather than a pushchair and a light scarf or mask against dust. The pre-dawn viewpoint and the crater stairs — we would not. The altitude is around 2,000 metres in the caldera, so watch small children for tiredness and keep them drinking.

### Our children want to see the sunrise. Can we include it?

Yes, with an extra hour ($100). For families we use King Kong Hill rather than Penanjakan: it is lower, a little less windy and much less packed, and the walk from the jeep is short. Dress children in ski layers, hats and gloves, bring a thermos, and keep them in the jeep until the sky starts to colour.

### Are the horse rides safe for children?

They are walked, never ridden alone at speed, and each pony is led by its owner. Helmets are not usually offered, so for very small children a parent riding with them or walking alongside is safer. The ride is paid to the handler directly and is not part of the package.

### There are grandparents with us. How hard is the walking?

Very little, if we plan it. The jeep drives almost to where we shoot on the sand, and the family portrait needs a few dozen metres of walking on firm ash. Grandparents can rest in the jeep between frames. The crater stairs and the walk to the rim of Penanjakan are the hard parts, and neither is needed for this session.
