## In short

A family photoshoot in Canggu costs from $180 for 30 minutes, with 15+ edited photos delivered online within 48–72 hours. The two plans that suit children here are a morning session around their surf lesson at Batu Bolong and a late-afternoon play session on quieter Pererenan beach. Starting at your villa first adds an extra hour ($100).

Families in Canggu tend to stay for weeks rather than days, and their holiday has a shape: surf lessons in the morning, a pool in the afternoon, dinner somewhere with a sandpit. A family session here works best when it borrows from that routine instead of interrupting it. Batu Bolong’s soft, breaking whitewater is where many children learn to stand on a board, and a photographer on the waterline catches the thing parents never manage to film themselves — the first ride, the wipe-out, the grin afterwards. The other option is Pererenan, across the river from Echo Beach: fewer bars, open sand, fishing boats near the river mouth and room for small children to run without weaving through bean bags. One thing is particular to Canggu: the black volcanic sand heats up fast, so this is a morning or a last-hour-of-light shoot, never a midday one.

## How the shoot is planned

The surf-lesson version starts when the lesson does, usually early, and we agree the time with your surf school. For the first fifteen minutes the photographer stays on the waterline with a long lens while the instructor pushes your child into the whitewater — paddling, standing up, falling off, being cheered by a parent knee-deep beside them. Then everyone comes out of the water for the family part: boards on the sand, wet hair, a towel wrapped round the smallest, the whole family walking up the beach with the surf behind. The Pererenan version begins about forty minutes before sunset at the northern end, away from the bars. We start with games — chasing the wash, digging near the fishing boats, a piggyback race — and gather everyone for two or three whole-family frames when the light turns gold. With an extra hour ($100) we begin at your villa, where small children warm up to the camera at home before the beach.

## Timing

Black sand is the deciding factor: by late morning it is too hot for bare feet, so we shoot either before about 8:30 am or in the last hour before sunset, which falls around 6 to 6:45 pm through the year. Mornings suit toddlers and early sleepers, and the beach is calm, with surf schools and dog walkers rather than crowds. Lessons follow the tide, which shifts daily, so the exact start comes from your instructor. April to October is the most reliable stretch, though the dry-season swell can make the shore break heavier — on those days children stay in the shallow whitewater only. From November to March mornings are the safer bet, since storms tend to build in the afternoon and the sea can be murky after heavy rain.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you photograph our child’s surf lesson?

Yes — it is one of the most rewarding family sessions in Canggu. Tell your surf school that a photographer will be on the beach so the instructor keeps your child in the area we can see. We shoot from the waterline with a long lens, never from the water, so we do not get in the way of the lesson or other surfers.

### Is Canggu’s sea safe for small children in the photos?

At the waterline, with an adult next to them, yes. The west coast has rips and a dumping shore break, so we never ask a child to go deeper for a picture: the wash at their ankles looks like the sea in a photo. At Pererenan the river mouth shifts with the season, and after rain we choose a stretch north of it.

### What should we bring for the kids?

Water shoes or sandals for the walk on hot black sand, a spare outfit and a towel in the car, a snack for the moment energy dips, and sunscreen applied at least twenty minutes before we start. Light colours — white, sand, pale blue — stand out against dark sand; black clothes disappear into it.

### Can we also get a short video of the children?

Yes: the reel add-on ($110) gives one vertical clip of 15–30 seconds, filmed between the photographs and delivered within 5–7 days. It is especially good for the surf lesson, where a few seconds of a child standing up for the first time say more than a still. If you are flying out soon, express delivery of the photos within 24 hours is $50.
